Newbie - North Wales Wanting advice!!

Hi i'm Dion from North Wales.
I'm thinking of buying a BG 182 54 Reg, never owned a Clio before so what are the main things to look out for?
Going to see one this afternoon.
And also what are the best insurance companies for a 22 year old with 5 years no claims and clean license?

Thanks,

Dion

Welcome!

Admiral are who I use and they always seem to be the cheapest. Make sure the 182 has had the cambelt done at a proper garage.

I'm with Churchill. 26 with 6 years NCB. They aren't the cheapest but the service is second to non and the insurance comes with loads of stuff like breakdown cover, windscreen cover, like for like car replacement if mine is damaged/stolen, low excess! It's good.

also welcome!

Jack

Thanks! What sort of price am i looking at paying for insurance? As i'm currently driving about with a PD 130 sport Passat.
Going to see the Clio later on, i'll let you know how it goes.

How much you looking to pay for the 182 bud??

I'm not too sure yet, Will have to give my insurance a ring on Monday morning to sort out a quote.

Just seen the car, taken it for a drive etc. Fairly happy with it, Goes well and it has a full milltek which is a bonus i guess.
Although, it has a slight knocking noise when going over speedbumps on the left (Passenger) side suspension, didn't have quite enough time to look etc properly but before i go back to see it has anyone got any ideas as to what it might be? Or is it a common fault?

Hope my insurance is not too bad and I'll be the happy owner of a 182 soon! :)

Dion.

Knocking on my old 106 and my mates Yaris T-Sport were the drop links. The knock on my TT was the Anti roll bar ball joint dust cover. Could be either of those I guess...
What I'm trying to say is what ever is causing it, won't be serious. Both the above were £20-30 for the parts and then either fitting yourself if you are handy with the spanners or an hours labour! Factor £50-60
into the cost when negotiation on the final price to get the knock fixed! :)

Only thing to bear in mind with insurance is if you want to modify it at all.

Cheers Jack, i suspect its the ARB or the Topmount or something similar. I'm competent with tools etc. so i can fit whatever it is when i find out.

And Archtronics, to be totally honest i'm not planning on modifying the car at all. Theres a few bits i'd like to tidy up if I end up buying it but otherwise looks good and goes well as it is.

A lot have been talking about making sure the belts have been done, ipis it a big/expensive job on a 182? As i usually give a car i buy full belts and service regardless of service history.

The 182 will have air con so you will need the AUX belt doing at the same time as the cam belt and your dephaser should be done at the same time. I am due one soon... :( I have been talking to another member and he has explained why it's so expensive! The space you have to work on whole the engine is in the car is very limited, and it's a time consuming job. If you have the skills yourself, then ok, but garages will charge a lot in labour. My plan is tyres first and then save for the belts as they should have around 7k/4 months according to the history...I think! :/

place called Birchdown Autos over toward me in Chester will sort it for you. They have been really helpful to me and people speak highly of them. North wales shouldn't be too hard to get here!

How much are you looking to spend on the car? There are a few good insurance companies in the traders section but you need full membership to access them and the discounts. Cost of belts on these is circa £600 so check when they were last done and also who did them. I have a few clios if you'd like to compare before you take the plunge.

I would plan to do the work between myself and my brother, so that isn't such a hard job as i first though, parts seem quite expensive but, once its done i can rest assured for a while!

Any other common faults? Exhaust hangers etc. and the dogbone are the only things i've heard about regularly failing. But these cost a few pounds so i'm not that concerned.

Already ordered i think Chi, being fitted on tuesday. Seems from the build threads here thats its a fairly common mod though! :)
