Newbie to RS Clio 172 cup- advice on car

  Mini R56 JCW 211bhp
morning boys and girls

I'm looking at buying my first RS Clio. A 172 cup. The car used to be running a turbo conversion but this has long been removed. I'm just wondering if it's worth buying as it is cheap but it also does need work doing and I know very little about these cars.

It has 115k miles on, looks original and overall clean bar being lowered. But it has no history, needs a tyre, the engine I'm sure rocked as it went into reverse and moved, has a few bolts n bits missing like the engine was put in as a rush job. It has a 4-2-1 manifold and almost straight through 2" or 2.5" stainless exhaust down-swept at the end. Even the battery isn't fully secured. And it has a loud tapping noise from the front of the engine bay when warm. I did video it which when played back sounds like a diesel so assume this is the dephaser belt. What does this do exactly? I will upload the pics and videos shortly once they upload.
Is anyone local to Newcastle Silverlink willing to give it a quick once over for me? Or know the car- reg YK03VBM?
I've spoken to one previous owner who had it running a 300bhp turbo conversion and he has helped hugely.said current belts will be around 2 year old and said what suspension upgrades it has. I also messaged the previous owner now on Facebook for info on it but the dilemma is, cheap for a reason walk away or cheap bargain?

How much is it for sale for?
If the dephaser is rattling, you may aswell do a full belt swap, which can be circa £400 to do on a cup. So add that into your budget + the time and money for other issues you have to sort out and see if you think its still a bargain. There are a lot of 172 cups out there for sale so don't rush into it.

£800. Could I sort the bits and pieces first like tyre, engine mount and then put the money for the belts together over a few months? I've read a few threads on a few websites where nobody seems to know of a dephaser actually letting go, just rattle their tits off alot.

Belts to my knowledge would have been changed in the past 2 years according to a previous owner who changed the engine.

So general consensus is keep looking?

Rest of the videos I took when I was having a look finally loaded-

I wouldn't even entertain this mate, I'm sorry but if it's been running a turbo then an engine swap then the belts have been changed without the dephaser been done, all slaps me as been done cheap, used and abused.

Surely it had solid mounts etc running that much power so why's the engine moving?

All strikes me as being fucked, spend more money and buy a good one.

its £800 for a reason though. if you want a good one with history, belts done and shiney shiney paint etc you need to be looking at the £1600-2000 price bracket. offer £600 - its worth that all day in bits if you cant turn it around...

Bit of an update on this.

Got my pal to have a look for me once he got back from running his 172 on the Nurburgring.

Issues he could see were just 2 tyres and tracking, lack of history and the dephaser rattling. However he did say he's heard a lot worse and the videos make it sound 10x worse than it is. So I've taken a punt and bought it. Engine mount was solid, battery is missing its little securing clip and it's just 1 mounting bolt missing that is of importance. Suspension I believe is Ktec Konis and exhaust is a ktec stealth.

First on the agenda is tyres- recommendations?
Then a service- 5W40 fully synthetic oil? Check plugs and filters.
Then I will tidy it up inside and out as I'm a bit of an OCD freak for a clean car. Maybe debadge it with a 16v door marker for a more stealthy appearance. Then I'll have the £ to pay for the belts done. Only garage I really trust is UnitSixteen in Newton Aycliffe (Jamie) who used to have a white Fast Car featured Clio. Knows his stuff and quoted me around £550 all inclusive including dephaser.

I definately thought belts were cheaper than £550 with the dephaser on a cup. have a look on the trader section here.

  172 Turbo
Yeah, Clio Turbo do them for £440 last time I checked, less 10% for members of this or a Facebook Clio owners club

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Just as an example all in is £550 @ Diamond on a FF172. Will be cheaper on non-aircon Cup.

No worries lads. So should be looking at about £400 to £450 for belts done then?

Just waiting for an insurance payout ATM before I can collect it so end of the week I hope.

I was quote £400 to get the belts done via a known and respected chap on here local to me. Seeing as my dephaser was gone it went up to £600. He told me that a Cup was around £50 cheaper.

@MicKPM quotes £495 for belts and a dephaser on a Cup which is cheaper than most places near me, including some specialists.

Truth be told, I would have gone to Mick if the specialist to me was not closer or as well respected as he is ; 3 friends of mine have used him without any issues. One of them does have alot of faith in Mick though which may have to become an option for me soon.

Do ClioTurbo change the oil when doing the dephaser pulley? I understand this is something @Fred@BTM and @MicKPM do perform when doing so.

That price is surprising given the time to do one and price of the bits initially ; over half of that cost has to be in parts alone!
