Have been told theese are the best plugs you can get for the RS, not sure of the part/plug number for the F4R?

Any ideas ..thoughts?

Wrong section indeed.

In answer to your question unless your standard plugs are due for a change, there's no point at all in going for 'performance' plugs, they render no benefit over the OE part.

I had a email from GDI a few months back saying they make a difference on tuned engines.

And you believe every marketing email?

If your plugs are knackered and need a change, then by all means choose some others. If your plugs are fine, and your car is running well then you're throwing away money.

Simple as that really.

Ok mate, i see what your saying but i have always changed plugs every 12,000 miles on every car i've had regardless.

here's a copy of the mail

Dear Newsletter SubscriberDuring an extended mapping and test session on our
Demo 182 we discover
some interesting results about the standard spark plugs.Whist optimising the
ignition map for best power we found that the
standard plug was infact causing loss of power when getting to the peak
ignition timing. On higher power engines with more than basic mods, i.e. cams,
headwork etc
the plugs tips can start to deteriorate and not only loose power but cause
damage to the engine, if the engine is under constant high load.We collaborated
with NGK Technical to find a more suitable plug, this
allowed us to run the ignition timing we needed and keep the engines in
one piece. We are now stocking these plugs and highly recommend using them on
engines
running modifications.Get in touch in you need more info on this or any other
technical issue.

Are you tuners implying Andy's talking rot?

Am I?

I would do no such thing.

But stock plugs are a fine wire precious metal electrode.........why?

Its not just the ability to provide a substantially longer service life.

Fine wire plugs require less voltage to ionise the same gap.......or in simple terms, they provide a stronger spark. The smaller the electrode tip, the greater the field strength, and with high temps involved, the ability for the electrode to discharge is greater with a smaller wire.......however traditional materials would simply melt. Its not as simple a thing as conductivity anymore.

Swapping from one fine wire to another is, i doubt, because of any specific issue with the material, but simply due to the additional heat a plug has to get rid of when you increase the VE at higher RPM. However it is pretty common knowledge that you'll have to alter heat range of the plugs.

Its all pretty general and sweeping statements, as any engine that spends alot of time at constant high load will invariably require a plug that can get rid of the heat faster.

However, overly high ignition timing leads to det, which leads to tip destruction.......precious metal plugs dont just 'melt'. But then again, it all depends on what the values for MBT were and if there was a comparable difff between the 2 torque curves due to changing plug and runing even more timing. Then again, this also assumes so many factors regerding the det threshold. Simply searching for more and more timing is a lost cause.......we want to run as little as possible.

All in all, nothing new learnt.........you cant go on running the same plug forever.
