NO serice history

  Megane 225 F1
Found a RB 182. No service history. Few marks on alloys but nothing major. £3500. Now the guy says that its had cambelt etc done, but even if hes lying and it hasnt been done, at £3500 i can get a service done and cambelt changed at and it will still be cheaper than buying one with everything done with service history. 50k miles aswell.

Now, is it worth it?

This is a serious thread. I dont want stupid answers thankyou :)

It's a relatively young car, I'd be suspicious of the mileage tbh. Do the MOT's all look ok mileage wise? imo it's not cheap enough to warrant the risk, a 172 with history would be a safer bet.

That sort of thing may be worth a HPI tbh. Check the Doovla website for MOT mileage too (if you can)

Dont do it-- You WILL regret it-

There is a chance that of course this car may be fine- however on average with no service history you are asking for trouble-
£3500 + 500 for belts you are at 4k, for 50k miles you could probably pick an RB up for £4750 with a decent history-

Only 750 more- less risk, worth more in the long run-

All very good points. All of which sway me towards giving it a miss.

Brown bear: I dont know, i saw the advert on PH earlier and emailed the guy. He said service history has been lost but he didnt mention MoT's. Good catch.

Its a no for me :)

Thanks all.

I try to keep all receipts etc for work but the other half has a habit of "cleaning" my man drawer out. Grrrrr

At the moment im struggling to find all the paperwork for my car! Bloody woman!

Personally no. I'd want every MOT to prove mileage and atleast receipts of work carried out / parts purchased.

Is it an RB Cup or an RB FF?? If it's just a Cup then a minty mint one with history isn't going to go for much more than £4500 - £5000 atm... There's that silver one on ph's posted earlier for about £4500 which is a FF on Turini's with FSH I believe... I know what I'd spend my money on.

Its a risk at best.

As said already, re-sale is a mare as you will be trying to explain this to the next curious person and itll need to be sold under the odds (as its under the odds at the moment as it stands imo)

  Iceberg 172
I've just seen the advert... not my cup of tea... s**t ad, s**t pics, no cup packs, meh, I'd put £3500 into a nice 172 if that's all you've got.

If its only worth £4500 without then no its not worth it, for me it would need to be £2500 to make it worth the risk and hassle.

  Iceberg 172
That RB wouldn't be worth £4500 if it had FSH imo.

Only enthusiasts are going to spend top money on a 182 these days, especially in RB, it doesn't have any Cup packs and looks a bit tatty imo... Exhaust looks funny, stickers on bumper, plastic mats... all signs of an un cared life imo.

Hence buying it and spending a bit of dolla on it.

But im not, still looking for a good 'un.

Maybe I'm getting old and either I've lost the love of spending ££££'s on a car as I see it as throwing it down the drain but I look at cars as an investment.

YEs I mod for personal pleasure but... If you spend £3500 on that, a further £1000 on servicing / sorting it out... You'll lose shed loads on it!

i would check dvla for the old mots etc to make sure mileage is rite, then do a hpi, if all is ok, offer him 3 k cash and you would pick up rite away.

From date of reg to 3 years old is the easiest time to clock a car. (No MOTs so no record of the car anywhere)

UNLESS! Its got full service history (reciepts, any monkey can buy a book and stamp it up)

I'd avoid.

Last two cars I've bought had no service history with them, both have been pretty good apart from the usual Clio niggles.

1) Buy cheap, spend loads of money, sell cheap.

Or

2) Buy expensive, spend no money, sell expensive.

2nd option sounds a better bet imo.

There is a site that you can put some details in (MOT number and reg iirc) and it gives you the MOT History.

Buy expensive, have more depreciation though.

If you have it a few years, and build up some service history, it would be easier to sell with Part service history.
