No spark

  Honda & VW
Right well long story short my Mrs' 182 wouldn't start on the weekend, turned over but wouldn't fire up.
Greenflag man came out and diagnosed it as being the coil pack.

replaced the coil pack tonight but still no change.

My mechanic mate came round to have a look and after found that we had no spark.

any ideas on this, he suggested it could possibly be something relating to the immobiliser - are there any common faults with this.

any help will be gratefully received.

tdc sensor is a common fault, immoboliser light go out ? any other warning lights on ?

which is the immobiliser light, the red led one on the dash?
all warning lights stay off when ignition is on, however do flitter when trying to turn over.

So would the TDC sensor prevent spark, i thought this linked with the fuel

Right not yet checked the TDC but have done the following after reading others threads with similar issues some pointing at the immobiliser being the problem:

Turned ignition on and off 20 times - no joy

Removed the black connect under the glove box, had ignition on for 30 seconds, pluged back in, turned ignition off, waited 30 seconds then turned on again before waiting 20 seconds to fire her up - still nothing

Checked all HT leads were on coilpack in correct order

Now for a couple of questions:

My single led light on the dashboard which i assume is the immobiliser flashed when locked/armed, then stays flashing when unlocked/unarmed - when i turn the ignition on it goes out fully - is this right?

Immobiliser LED - yep that's right it should extinguish when IGN is on.

TDC is above the gearbox, kinda below the battery area yeah.

Sounds stupid but have you tried the spare key?
Also try disconnecting the battery for a short period if you haven't already done this.

Yep one of my first thoughts was to try the spare key, no joy though

haven't done the battery yet though, always worry that the alarm will go mad, sounds stupid but can i just disconnect?

Just disconnect the negative terminal on the battery (the black one) and leave it for an hour. As long as you do it with the car unlocked and the alarm unarmed it shouldn't go spazzy when you reconnect it.

Same here, but when I've had to disconnect the battery that's how I've always done it and it's been fine.

get someone to check it over with a diagnostic tool.
a good person will be able to check to the rpm reading in the ecu to see if the sensor if working correctly. may save you time , and money.
where abouts are you ?

i would do it as have a clip (renault tool ) but i am in south london/ surrey areas.
i think lemonnobby on here is based in bristol , he will be able to sort it out.
probably 1 or 2 others around there as well , ask in the wanted section for someone local ? im sure someone local to there will know someone to sort you out .

Does sound TDC related, it's normally working its magic above the gear box... bit hard to see but will be close to where the block and box join and should have a cable running to it. 2 bolt's, clean it up and check the connection to loom.

long story short, its now working.
We took the TDC sensor off to give it a clean, to be honest it had next to no dirt or grime on it but wiped it down anyway.
low and behold when put back on it fired up first time, happy man i am!

thanks for everyones help with this.

nice one , as said above , probably best to replace , the connector can often be the cause instead of the sensor itself. if you buy a new sensor you will need a connector with it. will give you confidence in it at least.

i would replace the tdc for the cost, it sounds as if its weak, a small ammount of dirt can but should not stop it starting :)

What would constitute it being weak as we testing it with a mulit meter and it appeared ok, must have just bee the dirt.
I will keep my eyes pealed for TDC sensor anyway however as its better to have it should it pack up, i've got a spare coilpack now might as well start a little collect ;)
