Noise When Turning - Think Pump??

  Clio 182
Noticed the last few days a whining/whiring noise when turning the wheel. Also can hear faintly in background when accelerating/slowing down.

Seems worse when cold/first thing in morning.

Have a video taken a short while ago stationery in car park turning wheel from left to right lock and back a few times and the noise appears but can’t upload it

Standard PAS pump feature I think, especially when cold.

Mine has done it for the 30K miles I`ve owned it, and the belts have been done at Diamond within that period.

It hasn`t got any worse or gone bang.

Had the car 1 month and up until Thursday it has never made that noise before.

Just had a look under the bonnet and trying to work out where it’s coming from and appears to be from here...

You don`t want to believe everything you read on here.

I know! Just searching and found similar sounding problem and that’s what someone suggested.

Know nothing about mechanics/engines! Plus Clio’s are new to me so struggling. Going with what in my head is the “logical” answer and hoping it’s right

What is this and does it look empty??

Yes it does.(look empty)

It`s the PAS reservoir. so you have a leak somewhere.

And the noise in your video is not the normal whirr.

Fill it up before you drive somewhere for a competent diagnosis.

Sounds like the pump is running dry, but that could be a secondary effect of a leak elsewhere.

Urgent rectification required, if the PAS seizes the AUX belt could break and end up in the cambelt.

End of.

Thanks ?? Will get some fluid tomoro (presume from Halfords?) top it up and see what that does.

The leak theory does make sense as it’s is dropping fluid. Isn’t a lot but is making sense with current problem. Previous owner thought it was oil but level was changing. Been meaning to get it checked out so think this is the catalyst for that

That pas tank does not look empty to me, when cold the fluid should just be below the two prongs on the filter.
You can pull that filter out of the tank and inspect the fluid, if it’s dirty get it changed. Don’t run it without the filter or it’ll spurt out the cap

This is the level mines been at for the four & a half years I`ve owned it (about 10mm above the floor of the filter) and the other pic is Haynes recommendation.
No prongs visible.

As long as it doesn’t lose any or spurt out I wouldn’t worry about it, i was just told the prong thing years ago which is probably rubbish really

**small update**

Went and bought some more steering fluid and took out the (what I would call) filter and the table as basically empty. Filled up and it hasn’t made the noise since so putting it down too that.

Car has had a small leak since I’ve owned it (was aware when I bought it) but is only minor. Off the back of what’s happened I’m thinking the leak is related to the above so have booked it in with a local Renault specialist near me (Two Techs) to investigate further!
