noisey at idle speed

I just bought a phase 1 172 , with 49000 miles on clock ,mots to prove mileage. i drove it home which was a 50 mile journey , and every thing seemed fine . i have jst been out for a 5 mile journey , left it ticking over on my drive and compared to my wifes 182 , its noisey on tick over , its coming from the top end cams i think , as soon as you blip the throttle its the same as the 182 , its an even sound if that makes sense . any ideas.

no not really , ive had cars before where hydrolic tappets have gone and it isnt a harsh sound like when the cams worn ,its just noiser than my other car , the rev counter is only showing just over 500 rpm , as it idles and the 182 is showing 800 rpm

You don't need a guide on how to remove the throttle body?!! Its four 10mm bolts and a plug! And of course pull whatever air feed off that you may have.

But I don't think this is the OP's problem tbh, mine sounds a bit like a diesel on tickover only, and I've cleaned my TB a few times trying to cure a very rarely occuring throttle limp home and dash light (ECU one, little graph).

I've kind of got used to mine now and live with it after people saying they are generally noisy at idle.

Interesting you mention the injectors, that is about 90% of the noise of a diesel engine anyway due to the high fuel rail pressure. Direct injection petrol engines generally have similar noise issues (Golf Mk5 1.6 DI sounds and feels like a diesel at idle and manoeuvring). But our little Clio's shouldn't since they're PFI!!

Does it sound like a diesel on idle? possible dephaser pulley on the inlet cam!
