Noob alert - common faults to look for??

  vtr, 172, s1 rallye
Right im in the market for a clio, Ive used the search function, read a few problems and faults etc.... as been around forums for a while and know to try and do a bit of reading before posting crap for the sake of it.

Been wanting a 1*2 for a few years but my current track car has been taking up all my funds.

Until NOW!!

so ive seen a few gearboxes tend to leak/die early and its important to have the aux belt at least changed on 36k (pref cambelt aswell).

Is there aything else i need to look out for before hading over my freshly pressed notes???

Im a saxo owner (dont hate me for it:rasp: ), so obviously theres a few faults we have to look out for, such as the ignition relay, abused engines and boxes, foooked rear beams from pikey lowering etc...

Any help would be great.

Ry...

Ye look out for people posting in the wrong part of the forum.

I have been through the forum and checked, i moderate a very busy forum, so tried to make sure i didnt post in the wrong place or post something which is posted often.

so sorry if it offended you ;)

I wouldn't worry about it.. we all do it just to keep the mods busy ;)

I think there is a sticky somwhere with all the common faults on 1*2's, have a read.

yes been trying to find a sticky. done plenty of sifting, only reason i posted was because ive found nothing.

i know how frustrating it is when stuff gets posted daily.

I used to get pissed off with the retarded electric supercharger/ebay chip threads lol!

Im 6ft 6, so also need to check i can fit in the car properly lol!

Just look for the usual things. the biggest thing is the cambelt. if its 5 years old or approaching 36k then both the cambelt and aux belt needs to be replaced and it is expensive (£400 - £500 indy / £800+ at a dealership).

it should pull like a train from 4000 upwards and if it wanders about abit when you floor it that is normal!!

The suspension will likley squeak on full lock. this is normal.
The exhaust is rubbish and rots very fast. check it to see if it is on a standard Reanult item because if it is this will need replacing at some point (£300 - £400 for another).
Tyres are about £100 a corner (Michelins).

Can't think of anything else major to check for.

4k rattle - replace exhaust centre box iirc.

full lock knock - suspension top mounts, not a huge prob just annoying. Most probably sorted under warranty by now.

Front bumper - look for two black stickers either side of the middle bumper grill, usually a tell-tale sign of a bumper respray/replacement if absent.

Uneven tyre wear.

Leaky rear shock - will need to replace both really, 100 quid.

As already said but with timing/aux belt changes, some people just have the belts replaced, the proper job entails all the pulleys also iirc!

Also, oil/filter changes at half intervals is a good sign of care.

Steering wheel leather perishes easily - general build/material quality issue, not necessarily a sign of abuse.
