can anyone tell me if this is the dephaser?

i had the belts done not even 50 miles ago when doing the engine conversion. but did not do the dephaser..

then about 4 miles into my first journey my power steering pump destroyed itself and had to get that sorted and so about a month ago it had power steering pump changed, pully and belt.

i only picked this up the day before yesterday from the garage that done that work.

and now went out to start the car and de ice it and heard this :( also in the video i go round to check the smoke. i had turned it off and turned it back on before i had started it again it was plowing out black/dark grey smoke and lots of it.

help appreciated. would this be something to take up with the garage that just done that belt?

Yeah 100% dephaser.

You've been on here since oct 2008. Surely you should know belts should be done at specialists or renault, not the local garage !

Correct me if i'm wrong.

i was advised differently. i even asked should it need done. but told should be reet, i hadnt looked into it properly enough to know how big a task it is.. after all im no mechanic so who am i going to listen to? someone with their time served renault mechanic or a apprentice joiner that goes on a forum?

that sounds worse than just a dephaser, see why its wise to go to a specialist?

95% of the belts we do have a dephaser change too, we advise it for a reason!!

what kind of price would i be looking at from a specialist for a full engine rebuild? say i sent an engine to be rebuilt and everything done. i would rather do that just for peace of mind.

im not in hear to b**ch about the work done i just want my car fixed. its not been on the road since before november and that was a 4 mile trip.

Sounds like when mine went it was a combination of dephaser water pump and power steering pump all fooked,I had only had my cams fitted the month before and that was by a specialist who did not advise me to change the dephaser, hence they won't see my car again.
Done the water pump myself and TDF done the rest,so car has had 3 cam belt changes now in 10k as the cambelt was done just before I bought the car so I do feel for you mate.

aren't you local to us? bring it down and we can at least diagnose the problem!

if i was local to you i would have had you do all the work from the very begining, however im in glasgow and from what i gather there isnt many specialists local to me.

whats your number fred and i can give you a call in the morning, im going to give a specialist a call that is around 30 miles away SWR in stirling. but its just getting the car there. as its just undriveable it needs a new driveshaft.

thing is mine had alot of work before and there has been no sign of it making any noise at all. i had the power steering pump done and its done around 6 miles since then.

i guess im just as unlucky as you mate.

this all happend suddenly yesterday it was running mint no sign of any noise, all i done was start it thismorning and straight away when i fired it up it made that dreadfull sound.

Could still be waterpump and dephaser or just dephaser, had a few mechanics look at mine and got all sorts of reasons from piston rings to the engine is fooked mate.Mine was also fine one day and then just sounded like a bag of s**t the next.Do you not have AA or rac, then get it recovered to freds.

Mine was identical to that, but louder. The guy thought there was something else wrong. It was that knackered the cam was rattling no matter what revs. I too had the belt changed three times in the space of 2 months.

well we do have a car in from Glasgow at the moment! If you need any help give me a call chap

Not trying to kiss you ass here or anything but you are always proper helpful, running a business and giving advice down the phone! You Sir are a winner!!

Would that noise just start after the belt change, could they have damaged the pulley in any way or anything?

One garage I phoned local to me told me not to change it due to them never needing a change, luckily i read up on here before.

Hope you get it sorted.

  lots of clios.
Sounds mora than a dephaser. Dont they get worse gradually? Mine is Starting to go and has coverd over a thousand miles and its no where near that bad!

Im sure people have siad dephasers go gradually, not straight away like you discribe... Also compaired to the other videos I have listened to, this sounds nothing like the dephaser. The other ones I have heard sound more like diesel engines (more of a chatter then a tick).

See that's what I thought, about it going straight away. Going to take it somewhere when I get the chance and get a second opinion. Then I can speak with a few of the specialists on here see if I can get some work done!
