OCD at its best (lots of pics)

All your perfectionism and your getting under the car with a scissor jack :nono:. Invest in some stands and a proper jack before it breaks and ends up on the deck or worse on you.

Shocked by the standard jack action ! Aside from the danger - Thought you would want to keep that jack unused ;) Remember seeing a neighbours BX GTi come of a standard jack about 10 years ago, would not use one unless in an emergency now. If you got it up on stands you could have done all your painting in one go.

I kind of see what you where trying to achieve but the paint application looks a bit thick and nasty IMO, maybe would have been smoother using the spray version. Looking uber clean as ever, you going to give them black spots another go ?

i know i prob need to invest in some axle stands and a trolley jack (have used my dads in the past) as its not the sort of thing you use every day!
i see your point about spraying the hubs etc! honestly in real life they dont look nasty and i didnt apply it thick (when i took the picture it was still drying) and hammerite is a bit like that till it drys! (and the main part of the disk edge and the hub, which is the only part you see, looks soooo much better, and it was the same paint that i used to do the callipers! just cleans the area up.. i dont know what to do with the wheels! (i spent longer on the rears!) but by the time i got to the fronts i had worn my self out tbh) i think i will need something even stronger then a acid based cleaner to get them that little bit better (but thats a bit scary) as i dont want anything stronger to run on to the faces!! ill think about it! :)

Please, FFS tell me you had axle stands. If the jack doesn't come down the sills will cave.

Sound a bit excessive, considering its only taking 1 wheels weight. Ive had 2 off the floor with scissor jack with no damage. If you cba with a trolley jack or stands just put the spare under the sill in case of an accident...

Paul, you're pretty much a certified mental... but then again the results speak for themselves! Fair play!

As for the jack, squishy head/leg time if you use the standard jack. With the amount of time you seem to spend under your car I'd just go the whole hog and invest in a real garage car lift, haha!

You do understand that painting your discs where the wheel fits them is a really bad idea unless you somehow got a uniform coating(electrostat powder coat?) as the thickness will be different all over, the wheel won't run perfectly true with the hub. You should really wire brush the surface on the wheel that butts up against the disc too to get rid of corrosion...

You can buy brake discs with a coating to stop them rusting where the pads don't run these days, would look and work considerably better than painting them...

The paint is soft and once the wheel nuts are all torqued up the wheel will sit level. You're talking about such fine tolerances that the wheel casting will be more out than any affect that painting the disc face will create, not including the general movement of the tyre heating/ cooling as they never ever sit dead centre. Hence for the need to balance them, and I think most weights go down to 5g?

I've done the same to one of mine to see what it looked like and it's been fine. Yeah the paint looks thick in the pics, but once it has dried it will be fine. If you're really that worried about it you could always paint upto the edge where the wheel meets the discs hub

Painting the edge of the disks biting surface won't do any harm either, I went over the edge by mistake. I tried cleaning it off with some brake cleaner but didn't get it all off. if its dried properly when you next use the brakes it'll scrub it all off.

You used to be able to buy fully anodised grooved disc, so once your through the anodising it'll show normal silver but still have coloured grooves
