OE Exhaust Insurance...

  ph1 172
Im with direct line so cant modify my car (not too bothered!)

Need to replace my exhaust but hoping to keep the car for a long time so not too keen to put a Renault one on!

Ive seen some cheapo looking non-stainless original equipment exhausts for 172's (cheapo motor-factors looking ones) and wondered if they would affect my insurance.

I know that i dont have to put Renault purchased parts on my car (i can get them from motor factors) and keep the insurance valid as they are OE parts, but where is the line drawn?

Could i get an exhaust made that flowed no better, made no more noise and was the same spec as the Reanult one, as long as it was to the original spec?

good luck using a "mickey mouse" exhaust on a 172, it won't fit properly, never found one that does!

Just put a stealth on it, its just a like for like exhaust made out of stainless steel instead of rusty tin foil ...

Do you think they'd notice the noise difference or see a marking on it to suggest its not Renault?

I've got to declare mine still but need to find out which one it is first, as it car came with it.

Stainless can be OEM pretty much, the k-tec stealth you can't see etc so i'd imagin that you could get away with it. The metal your exhaust is made out of shouldnt affect anything, well i wouldnt declare it anyway.

I suppose im not going to get a legally tight answer without speaking to the insurance company. I just know its going to be impossible to explain it the the monkey on the other end of the phone.

i might just buy a standard one and strengthen it and paint it with high temp paint, then check and re-paint it every 6 months

I told Flux about my stealth as it replaced the standard one when it fell off. It didnt cost any extra as i just said i bought it as it had a lifetime warranty, no extra power anyway ...

Cool. I think I will tell them, I'm sure it was probably put on because it was cheaper and better than standard anyway.

I did the same. Was asked if it added any power, and if you could see a tailpipe. Answers to both are no/ unknown, so didnt add anything to my premium.

I think ive read about people phoning up their insurance, And explaining that there will be no gains with a stealth box other than it lasting longer. If they understood your point of view and that you woulnt get any more bhp they shouldnt put it up?

Worth a try? Or just do it and hope they wouldnt notice.

^i'd do that (guysy) - just call them and explain that the Renault exhaust has a reputation for corrosion and that you'd like to replace your corroded one with an aftermarket stainless system in the interests of reliability. they don't do anything for the power on otherwise standard engines, which is what insurance companies are interested in.

they might well be perfectly happy with that

This is what I was thinking when I got the car, but totally forgot to tell them. Think I shall do this tomorrow, time permitting.

Sorry for the 'jackage, hopefully should help you too.
