Oh dear

Currently sat in a lay by waiting for my mate, the 172 just died coming onto a bypass.

Have checked and the timing belt has snapped. Wasn't even due for quite some time.

Gutted :( I was thinking of selling and now this! That last drive was probably my last in a Clio sport. I've had a few and had my fun now.

Gutted for you mate. What makes you think the belt snapped?

I've had a look mate and can see the belt has frayed and I also heard parts of it pass under the car and out the back lol.

Just a click when turning the engine over now, the engine had massively reduced power for about 10 seconds as the rest of the belt died then just cut out!

Thanks for your help mate. Might be interested in that engine actually. Would need to research what else is needed to get it running in mine.

Hope you get what you want for it either way pal. I've had 2 Clios with engines that died and know how it makes you feel. I managed to sell mine for parts and get a lot, but not all of the value back.

  clio 172
2?! That's rotten luck mate! I'm gonna spend the day deciding whether to strip for parts or repair. Thanks again.

I suppose if I sell my Rallye I've got somewhere to strip it.

Plenty to think about!

Recovery have only just turned up. Rang them at 10.30 am this morning originally.

Been sat in a cold fucked Clio on a 70 mph dual carriageway since then.

Nobody ever rely on the AA please :)

That's shocking mate. I'd be writing in about that.

I've only ever had one breakdown and they promised to be there within the hour and they were (wasn't AA mind)

  clio 172
Yeah I'm going to, it was pretty awful to be honest.

The last person I spoke to at AA was incredibly pissed off on my behalf and within 20 mins of speaking to her a recovery truck turned up.

She has raised a complaint on my behalf but I'll be putting it all in writing to them.

I'm not one for compensation but I think 6-12 months free membership would be a decent gesture from them (if I can bring myself to trust them again). We shall see!

The thing about recovery is that it's needed only on the odd occasion. I would never pay for it. Thankfully I get it through my work. If I didn't have it I'd just phone somewhere or phone someone with a diesel barge to tow me home

Could of been worse waiting for AA mate.
The CS WM venture to the evo triangle was short lived when a lad off here's cambelt decided to shat itself. Ended up with the car spinning off the road at the same time. Then it started to snow. Then the AA bloke turned up about 3 hours later.
Bad times.

So the last one wasn't real...

I have it free through my bank now for the following reasons...

1: When the Audi's cam belt went, it was on the way to work, which was exactly where everyone I knew was also going and couldn't help
2: When the Ibiza died, people were asleep, so joined the AA at the roadside... never again!
3: When the tyre came off my Renault 5, I was embarrassed
4: When the Clio's alternator went I was mean't to be meeting @McDriftin and thankfully offered to be a gentleman

BACK ON TOPIC - I would stick another engine in mate, they are cheap enough these days :)

But then again I didn't spin off the road so in a sense got lucky compared to the other lad.

Either way it sucked and I wouldnt wish it upon anybody!
at least you had the AA.. a tow truck would cost a packet..there seems to be alot of belts on here breaking lately.

My experience of the AA is that the average response time is circa 3 hours. There's not many vans to go round!

Oh, and Chris, no probs :)

Damn! You must buy absolute pieces of s**t!

Only reason I broke down was when I didn't push a hose into the radiator tight enough and it popped off so was really my own fault

It's probably due to the fact these cars are getting so cheap it's a huge amount of money to get the belts done so folk are just risking it. Or if you're the op just very unlucky

all the cars that have failed, have had the belts done..wasn't done by specialists ,when i got my car, belts wasn't done by a specialist(found out latter) they lasted 5 years ,may of lasted longer, birchdown said the timing was 95% ok,and the space the tool goes in,didnt have any play, they said, they see alot thats been butchered. why is it most of the cars that fail, seem to be the aux belt snapping?
why is the aux belts failing? are people not changing them at 36000 miles? or are they changing the belt and not the tensioners? or is it bad mechanics? its a bad design when a aux snaps and wrecks the whole engine..
yes it costs alot, dont get much change form £700.. i changed everything on mine, when the belts was done, due to being paranoid ha

Yeah the belts on mine weren't done by a specialist but because they weren't due for 18 months I felt I had a little more time. I knew the risks so accept responsibility. My mate thinks I'm a tit because I told him I was booking it in to have it done about 2 months back then persuaded myself it would be ok!

My first thought was the aux belt had probably failed and taken the cambelt with it but the aux belt is fine.

I imagine most people only replace the aux belt at the same time as the cambelt, which would mean in most cases it's a couple of years overdue!

i did the same as you,i left mine ..i waited 3 years , but luckily it was ok..belts shouldn't fail after 3 and half years..just taking a chance on the person who fitted it..seems the one who did mine, knew what they where doing..all depends what you paid for the car, cause soon doing all the belts, will be worth more than the car.

Yeah exactly. It's all a gamble unless done by a specialist or I suppose (hope) a main dealer.

Have been stripping the engine bay this afternoon and found part of an exploded piston just behind the butterfly valve on the throttle body haha.
