Oil Filter Change Help on a valver?

  Williams 2
Need to change the oil filter on my Mk1 Phase 2 valver as the mechanic who was supposed to do a full service on my car, said he could not change the filter as it was too difficult to get to, and would be too much labour! Just wondering if anyone has changed theirs themself and how easy it was, tools needed etc, as he said that I would probably have to take off the radiator in order to get to it, lol! Any help would be good.:approve:

i remember when mine was loose it was very difficult to get to,i got a tool thingy from halfrauds like a little strap with a socket on it, if you can wangle your hand down by the filter and put it in loosly then tighten it with this tool.

cheers m8, I will certainly give it a go, may end up taking the radiator off though for easier access:S

Its a right pain best IMO to get a thin type oil filter.
How to get it out depends how long and dangly your arms are.
My prefered method is to get one of those tools to remove it which is like a bike chain. Then lie under the car and reach up to the gap to loosen it. Then get up and reach down the gap to pull it off and move it round till it falls out. Its easier IMO to do it like this as your arms fell like they will drop off if you work on your back all the time.

just done mine last weekend.

right pain but nothing harded then i've done before.

had a big oil filter on which wouldn't come out without damaging my hand.

so 1 broken hand later and i've got an oil change.

i work from under the car on axel stands

i used my dads 1960's style oil filter remover.

a pain but works.

doesn't take that long to sort it out.

cheers for help people:D, Sounds like fun, broken hands, ouch!.Will get some kind of tool at the weekend and give it a go. Plan on changing the oil to a 10w or lower for the winter, to help protect the engine on those cold morning starts, to avoid damage.

Get a 2.0 filter on it instead of the 1.8 one.

Exactly the same inside, just the 2.0 is thinner and has a moulded top on so you can get a spanner on it for next time.

got a scar on my left hand from doing mine! the rad scraped a nice think layer of skin off!
can be a right pig of a job! (as is pretty much anything on this car! no room!)

i move the rad forward abit, by taking the slam panel off and then reaching in and undoing.

another tip ive seen was to undo the dog bone mount and rock the engine back,

one of the chain jobbies works best for me, tried a strap one, and ramming a screwdriver though it, which made a nice oilly mess!

For draining the oil from the sump does anyone use a special drain plug tool, or is there something else that I can use?:boring:

think its an 8mm square drain plug thing you want, should be able to get one from the local factors

Yep its an 8mm square plug.
You cna use a screwdriver to get them out if you've got a big enough one but you'll end up damaging the nut.
