For the 2.o L 172 i use Halfords equipvelent own brand 5W40 as the price isnt bad, it is in the silver gallon container....but at 12000 miles service it will have the renault brand oil put in

aaronc - very easy - the car has to be in the air to get access to the oil drain plug - then you drop the old oil & pump in the new stuff by means of an hydraulic hand pump.

  Was a Clio 1.8 16v

I use Mobil 1 15w/50 in my 1.8 16v and is the best Oil ive had in it up to yet including Magnetex. Seems very thin compared to the GTX.

Why does Haynes recommend 15w/50 and Reno 10w/40?

Renault have a technical note out at present regarding "sticking gears" on JB TYPE gearboxes. you notice that when you sometimes try to change gear - its a little difficult tryin to select the gear you require. The elf 75w80 cures this problem & the box feels like a new one. I believe the problem is caused by moisture / condensation building up inside the box & causing lubrication problems. Try some - see what you reckon.

you will need 4 lts 7701383037 £8.45 per ltr + vat

+ a new drain plug sump washer 7700266044 about 15p

NOTE - technical note does not mean its covered under warranty.

So Reno cheapest place to get the gear oil from?

So that could solve my box shifting problems when warm in ur opinion? Thanx for the feedback.

MIKEY - yeh - there the only place to my knowledge

it may solve your problem - its worth a try - give it a whirl & see what happens.

"JB TYPE gearboxes". Does this include the Cup?

Ive lost count of how many times Ive crunched the gearbox when going from 2nd to 3rd.

While we are on the subject of oil, Im fast approaching 4k miles, and was considering booking the car in for an oil and filter change now that its run in. Is it worth the time and effort?

10k is too long to wait for an oil change !.........you should do it every 6k....even with the long life fully synthetics, i still reckon 10k is pushin it a bit.....and the stuff in cars from new isnt fully synthetic, id be changin that at 6k or sooner for sure

buy your own and take it with it for the service, and tell them you want them to use your oil - I always do, Renault have never had a problem with it.

My gears sometimes feel a bit "sticky" too. Usually putting it into first. How would I go about changing the gear box oil? Is it something I can do myself?

RHYS - get the car up in the air and undo the gearbox oil drain plug situated on the gearbox. release the old oil & pump in the new stuff using an hydraulic oil pump (pump it in by hand) its very easy & shouldnt take more than 10 minutes. remember to renew the g/box drain plug washer pt no 7703062062 - 15 p from renault !!

USE ELF TRANSELF TRJ 75W80 api gl5 - part no - 7701383037 £8.45 PER LTR.
