Ok, so how reliable/unreliable are valvers?

i really would love 1, after after sellign my mk1 rt 2day i am looking for a new car but i keep hearing the terms "bottomless money pits" lol, so how unreliable are they? i mean surely a well maintained low milage 1 cant be that bad!

depends how you drive really mate, had a few problems with mine but nothing really major!! Just get one mate, it'll be well worth it. Mine had low mileage when I bought it with full renault history but at the end of the day, its a 13 year old car!!

^^ so is there any major common faults with them? if i do buy 1 i want a late phase 2 defo wont get a phase 1 as i want the newest 1 possible

not really, apparently they arent very good in the winter months but mines been spot on, cambelt has to be changed at 72k. Mine is a phase 1 and had 67k when I bought it in June. In my experience, all renaults are a nightmare so just enjoy it! lol

Get a good one and you'll be fine.

However valvers are a pain to work on (big enginei engine bay to small) so work might have been bodged or not done propely.

I kknow its a terribalt thing to say but for the price difference I'd buy a Williams preferably a 1 or 2.

Unless you treat it like s**t then it will be fine. Only problem you tend to see is the circlip coming out on the box, make sure the belt has been done and make sure the one you buy is fairly quiet from cold. Some sound like tractors!

I've had mine for about 2 weeks now. The time I actually have driven it, 4 days. It's been in the Garage being fixed since then. :(

And it wasn't a pile of rubbish either, bought from off these very forums, with a lot of history. The things that have broke are the things that wern't fixed. lol. But I'm not too upset because I'll know that once the problems are fixed, she'll be very good.

Problems with the valvers,

Gearbox
Steering Column
PS Pump
Poor Idle
Rust (lol as like all mk1 clio's)
Leaking sunroof ( ^ )

And check the usual stuff, any odd knocks or noises, oil changed regularly, is the clutch ok, gears ok (no crunching), has the car been serviced regularly, are the plugs and leads new, when was the cambelt done, are the brakes in good condition.... etc etc etc.

Can't wait to get mine back! :D

Essentially mate it's a clio the same as yours with a bigger engine. If all goes wrong you could get a complete engine and box for 150-200 so no big deal ;)

If you want a valver, you will need two of four things.

1) A well paid job
2) An understanding Bank manager.
3) An even more understanding Wife/Girlfriend.
4) Plenty of Spare time.

Most have several owners and have been given death everwhere, high miles and tatty in general.

Find a good/looked after one and they're awesome little cars - but rare

yeah, my valver was great, i loved it, but it started to fall apart during the 3rd year of ownership, it was a 1991 model, and everything was wearing out, so it wasnt a big suprise....expect to be cutting your fingers in the engine bay and going to the garage alot ;)

As said above just buy one, but make have a good look round it and make sure it's in good nick. A good valver can be very reliable but you can get some complete dogs as well which do seem to have endless problems. Personally I am happy enough to get one, looking now, as I know almost anything that goes wrong I can fix myself but if I wasn't going to be doing the work myself I don't know if I would get one tbh. Common problems are wheel arches rusting, steering column and gearbox.

I owned my valver for 2 years and it was absolutely spot on. Never had any serious problem with it, and i found it to be EXTREMELY reliable, even in winter. Has always started first time, every time.

Unfortunately though, after 121k of pretty hard miles, the circlip went in the gearbox, and therefore was fooked.

Needless to say i dropped a williams engine + box in there this weekend just passed with my mate AmirClio and she's fine again!

Buy one, but make sure you buy it off an enthusiast on ClioSport with loads of history and loads spent on it, and you'll be laughing!

My valver engine still runs absolutely perfect on 121k, smooth from idle, even smoother when warm, no tappets, no dodgy chugging, nothing. Find the right engine and you will be fine.

as above really...i had my valver for over 2 years..as with all my cars it saw a good hammering pretty much every day. clutch was on its way wen i sold it for the williams......which iv now had 5 years....again no real trouble with this either.

as long as u get a good un, 1 thats been well looked after, even if its been well thrashed, as long as its had reg oil changes etc, u shud b alrite.

steering columns go....but £20 an a spot of weld sorts that problem out...gearboxes have a tendancy to throw the circlips out, again a fairly cheap repair....if ur lucky...£6-7 from reno for the clips.....if ur unlucky ul need a shaft too.£35 from factors.....an if ur really unlucky.......ul need a box too...£50 ebay.£400 from reno.

so not too bad prices really.

if u willing to get ur hands dirty...will save u a fortune in labour if owt does go wrong tho.

thats the main thing with these cars...labour charges seem to be extortionate...round about the time the mech has a look under the bonnet and sees how little room there is under there lol......a lot of peeps wont touch em...so give much higher estimates for work doin etc.

I got my valver when i was 17/18 and had it for a good 3 years, in that time i did have to do the head gasket and get the gearbox repaired (stuffed the diff, don't try wheelspin if you'r pissed off with another driver in the wet :D)
That's pretty much it for repairs and it's still going strong now, infact i bought it back about 12 months ago!
Doing a full rebuild on a Megane F7R, steel rods, high cr pistons, headwork, cams and itb's :D

Just buy one mate, they are great fun

A good one will be fine.
TomS's valver on here would be as reliable as any of the newer clios as an example.
