Opinions on second car...please

I am thinking of changing my Vovlo for something different (my second car for putting miles on). I have a budget of around a grand, so let me have your opinion. Looks arnt important. I want either something faster, or something very economical (ie a diesel). Both will probably be stripped down to reduce weight. If you have a suggestion please put down any stats or reason for purchase. So far my list includes:

Nissan Silvia / S12 Silvia (cost about 500 quid for a nice one, 120 BHP, same parts as a Nissan Bluebird so quite cheap, 0-60 in 8 secs, but expensive to run as they take 4 star, had two so i know alot about them)

Nissan 200sx / S13 Silvia pre facelift model (same as above really, get one for a grand, 0-60 7.7 secs)

Pug 205 1.6 GTI (dont know alot about them but they seem to be held in high regard)

Clio 1.9 diesel (500 to 1000 quid ish, cheap to run, reliable, slow but good milage, and can run it on vege oil just to piss off Gordon fatboy Brown)

Wouldnt recommend any of the above TBH - each would be OK until you had to fix bits, when they would each be expensive/time consuming. Try a 106 1.5d or Citroen AX 1.5d: these do up to 70mpg. The other hot contender is a Citroen ZX Volcane TD - the first diesel hot hatch.

We used to run a Volvo 340 and replaced it with a new shape 1997 Rover 200i (1.4 K-series 8v) for £1300. Ok, so that was a below trade price from an aunt, but theyre very cheap and usually come from good homes with low miles on the clock. Would definiotely recommend. Currently highly undervalued.
