Optimax advertising - Shell in trouble

  Renault Laguna Coupe

From AutoExpress:

Shell has been rapped for making claims about its Optimax petrol that ex-perts say arent true.

The company said in leaflets that its product "gives you an extra burst of fuel when you need it" but the Advertising Standards agency ruled that this would not apply to all cars. The judgement also said Optimax may not be "the best performance unleaded" as claimed by Shell.

Nope no proof at all.

ive been using any old 98 in my 182 bp is the cheapest so that gets used

always used bp super (now ultimate) coz the petrol station is close to me. Never noticed any difference between that and optimax.

Ive heard optimax is good at petrol stations that have a high turnover of it (i.e. it doesnt lay there too long)

No its 98 just like total and esso.

optimax is supposedly more than 98 but im not so sure

if it says 97 then its 97.

I was under the impression that only Optimax was 98ron, super unleaded/ultimate was 97ron and unleaded was 96ron

Normal premium unleaded is 95.
Ahh course it is. Never stoop that low lol. ( although my 5 turbo was running on 4 star!)

where does it say that?

also ive noticed that it doesnt list the RON on the ultimate pump, thought they had to do this by law?

dont knock 4-star, better than all this environment friendly crap... well, my Xr2 liked it more than unleaded.

Its about time that Shell got done for that. I thought it was dodgy when they first came out with it, and I emailed them about it. They wrote back to me admitting that it was only useful with cars running adaptive ECUs that would advance the ignition if using higher octane fuel, and basically admitted that it made no difference to older basic engines at all, eg a 16v F7P apart from just having some additives to clean the engine.

Wasnt 4 star over 99 RON? Cos I was thinking of running the Escort on it if it is, as there is at least one garage not far from here that sells it!

Just means you have to carry a map of 4-star-selling service stations if youre on a road trip! :p

So Optimax is the highest RON unleaded in the UK?

And also will offer little benefit over normal unleaded to a valver?

May as well buy normal stuff from now on. (Im such a marketing victim)

i used optimax for a while and car didnt seem to have any difference in performace! so i started usin ultimate and i will not use any thing else! it may be more expensive but it does a hell of a lot more miles on it and the engine seems to be alot more responsive wen using it!

my dad has a volvo S60 D5 and i have been filling that up with the diesel ultimate and that also adds about 80 mile on every full tank as well as seeming to give it that little extra nudge!

how a petrol can acctually give a car better performance and do more miles i will never know, but i dont question it i just use it lol

Regular fuel 95

All super unleaded fuels are 97

Optimax is the only fuel thats 98

Old four star was indeed 99 and if your old enough to remember 5 star fuel, that was in excess of 100 just like japan still has

If you cant notice a difference with the higher grade fuels then your car just dosent need it. If you look on the fuel filler flap you will see a sticker telling you it requires 98 on the Cup
