Overheating - Help please

I hasve only had my clio 5 days and when on the motorway last night in a traffic jam the car overheated, coating me in a cloud of steam etc.

Anyway after 5.5 hours of waiting for the AA {] the AA man said that my fan wasnt working and this was why, but it was ok to drive aslong as it didnt get caught in traffic.

So i got up an looked at it this morning, now it seems every time i turn the ignition to the electrical working point, just before starting it, the temperature guage, even though zero, has a red light on it.

Plus i inspected the fan and i found that there was no fuse for it in the fuse box, this was duly replaced and the fan still does not function.

According to the AA man the thermostat is working ok, but now since he unscrewed something on the radiator(not sure what it is(its in the top left if you are looking boot to bonnet)) its now leaking water []

Does anyone have any clues to what the problem is here, i cant help but think its more than a dodgy fan

your fan switch could be broken, you can get a low temp one from bb tuning, as for the leak, sounds like he opened the bleed valve, just turn it. See how that goes, you could try rad weld if it doesnt help, might cure it.

Thanks for the sugestions []

Hmmm just had the AA, hes getting a washer to fix the bleed valve, but from the looks of his testing(all the switches etc). the motor of the fan has gone. Just phoned up renault, 120 + vat for a new one []

It looks pretty tricky to fit any tips or hints on how to do this?

when the fan doesnt turn on its almost always the fan temp prob, this went on my XR2 2 weeks ago, and its easy to replace. But you can check your thermostat by taking it out and putting it in a pan, and start to boil it, take note at which temp it starts to open, then when its fully open and compare to your haynes manual.

dont be conned into buying th motor first as it could be a faulty sensor on the car, for £20 and easy job i know what ill try first

ive changed almost every switch and sensor on my car in the quest for a cooler running valver and now it rarely gets hot,

change the fan swith first but since your doing it get a lower temp r5 turbo one that will cut in earlier ok. also get yourself a 82 oc stat so it runs cooler in general ok, the OE one is 88oc and the temps are stamped onto the stat so you cant get the wrong one ok. try these first

cheaper than £120 and about 2 hours labour

Got the AA mechanis to check every sensor (he was really helpful []) and it seems it is the motor thats the problem, have managed to get it out now and have checked it and it defiantely doesnt work [] oh well 150 quid to spend []

if your gonna test the motor, just put a wire across both terminals on the fan plug...if it doesnt spin, fan broks.......ignition on of course!

wat colour is the coolant????? if it looks like diahorrea, then its the engine block rusting!! easy to sort. remove the rad, use a garden hose, and reverse flush it through. remove the expansions bottles and clean that out as well. repalce the thermostat, the reassemble it all. run it for a few days on plain water, then drain and refill again with clean water. this will remove any crudd floating around in the system. once the water remains clear for a few days, use deionised water and halfords summer coolant(pink stuff). make it a 50/50 mix.

I had problems with my valver a few omnths back, It seems that the wires that went to the tempature fan switch (when ignition was on) were corroded and this was causing the fan not to work when the engine was running, turn it off and the fan kicked in, took me ages to work out !!

I had that prob too!!! The night befor i drove up to birmingham! Had to make a overide switch before i went.
Know ive put a new fan switch and stat in. Works a treat now. And still got the overide switch.
