Pad / Caliper Insertion - Where do The Metal Prongs Go?

This is probably a stupid question but its late ;)

With valver brakes, where do the metal prongs on the top of the brake pad go when you insert the pad into the caliper?

My understanding is that the metal prongs go through the gap at the top of the caliper to hold them in place. This is always how i have fitted my new discs and pads however one of my mates told me this is the wrong way the prongs get bent somewhere else.

I've attached a pic to illustrate what i mean.

Any advice would be great.

nope they don't go through the caliper, they sit inside it, if you look closley you'll see 2 grooves for them
