Paint quote reasonable?

Been quoted 1k to paint the following

- Remove and paint front bumper
- Paint rear bumper
- Paint rear nearside 1/4 panel, rear door and blend into front nearside door.

Using these guys, they did some work on my E39 M5 years ago and did a good job.

Any thoughts on price?

I'd say that's spot on mate, I got quoted £300 to paint a brand new front bumper for the Bug and that was with me taking it to them.

Strip/fit = time.


Are they confident that the colour match will be spot on with the bumpers?

This is the problem I'm having with mine, it needs a few bits painted but they won't edge to edge so by the time they have blended into the other panel I may as well get a full re paint. [emoji45]

Front bumper is £400, rear £250 rest is the side with a little discount added.

If it ain't right I won't be paying that's for sure, but if they will warrant the work life, that has to be a good thing!

White is a git to match mate, I worked in a Bodyshop for a Porsche specialists so I know what goes into mixing paint.

But if the Bodyshop are confident that that's got to be good, I'm sure they'll do a spray out card first.

I think I would be okay with it. Make sure they are removing essentially all old paint from the front bumper for that price. Prevents easy chipping in future.

I know how anal you are over detailing, I'm assuming the body shop is a fair distance away from Wiltshire area?

But the total price to paint the front bumper, rear bumper, 1/4 panel rear door and blend into front door is 1k.

They where great ten years ago when they started up lol. Don't know about recent events, time will tell.

It's always hard to trust a bodyshop. We just rectified a new Jag that a shop charged a grand to paint the front end... it was like something a child would do with a roller.

He went back to them and they told him that was the best they could do. Seriously horrendous stuff.

Tell me about it, complete mind field if I'm honest. There are a couple more places I could try locally, most have not been established as long though. Went on detailing world asking for any recommendations around my way, No one posted.

I'm looking at 4 doors stripped down, rear quarters and blending in front wings, 1,400. And that's a lot more coverage than the above. I was also quoted 2,300 plus VAT elsewhere, and 600 for cash somewhere else lol.

Yeah. SL Restoration. They mainly deal in cars worth 3 times the market value and simply, they don't need the work. Hence if you want it done right, here's your price otherwise on your bike. Just giving you an example of expensive quotes.

Which is exactly why knowing someone who does top quality work for reasonable prices is really a privilege in the current climate

Nick and his Bro at SL really are the pinnacle in their game. Can't say it's that surprising, when people go to main dealers they pay what £65 an hour? £75 at VW maybe? It takes probably 5 hours minimum to do a rear bumper with zero repairs just re-paint. That's £325 just in labour.

The bodyshop industry had it's pants pulled down for years with £25 an hour but people just pay dealer prices and move on. Half an hour car service. £125+vat!

Yes, it wasn't a dig at them if it looked that way. It's why I went there first, just to try my luck. But when they came back with 2,600 for all the work - I thought...nah. Not on this car for a partial respray. Even though you know you're pretty much sure to get excellent work, it's a lot of money! On cars of lesser value I guess you need to meet half way and find someone you can trust.

Yes, 2 hours is ample time, not rushing either.

If you go off 5 hours to prep and paint a bumper, imagine how long it'll take for a full respray.

Prepping is not hard if done correctly, painting is not hard when done correctly.

If taught well and treat every job the same, your best, you can become a very good painter.
