Panel Filter / Induction kit / Air Box ... Your views

  182 FF
Hi MissVaVAVoom here (not MR)

Taking my car to Bucks Renault tomorrow and i am going to ask for there advice regarding air fiilters/ boxes / panel filter etc for a little bit more induction noise. I know you can take of the acoustic valve but i would rather leave that be. I have been reading about heat soak and stuff. A few people have suggested a standard set up is better than a Panel Filter. I have just been reading about Maxogen air filters but they are £300 +.

Your views please?

If you want noise and performance, the only way to go is the v6 airbox.

Virtually every aftermarket induction kit loses you power. You won't see much noise from a panel filter either, but piperx is supposed to be the one to go for.

I'm also not sure that Renault will have any idea at all about this.

LMFAO. Go find the 'funniest thing you've been told by a dealer' thread.

Renault will tell you that you can't possibly have a 182 as they never made a 2-litre. Seriously, do not even bother going there for anything. I really REALLY mean that.

They told me once that it looks like my car might have been lowered. Yes, genius, I can work that out by the fact that it's lower than everything else in the car park.

Buy a V6 airbox from Wests Renault on here then an ITG or A.N.Other company's uprated filter.

Done :approve:

Doesn't removing one of the cold air feeds give the standard box a bit of front end growl? can't remember which one tho lol. Correct me if im wrong.

yeah it does, i upgraded my panel filter and disconnected the feed at the front of the air box which i believe is connected to the acoustic valve which restricts air flow (hence the reduction of noise)

really no point in changing the standard airbox on a 182, its a fine setup as it is. panel filters are just a way of making money for something that isnt needed.....

cost saving if you are keeping the car as a new paper filter is £13 a time & thats for a pattern part! change it 3 times and you could have bought a panel which will last forever!

for 172's, is it the same deal?

(unplug air feed to air box, whack in ITG panel, win?)

Additionally, is Mace on holiday? He should have been greeting you by now

I think the point e was making is that a panel filter can be took out and cleaned whereas a oe one can't.

Yea i know that, my point is that although they can be cleaned they will still have dirt in them...my opinion only was that id rather put a new one in each service

Cotton panel filters should be cleaned with the right cleaners and then re-oiled with the right oils - both usually available. While they may retain a little bit of dirt after a proper clean, they're still better than the paper filters.

I'm running a K&N 57i kit on my ph1 172. When I bought It I knew nothing about heat soak, and now that I do I'm tempted to fit a lot of thermocouples to see if the air that it sucks in is significantly warmer. For those who aren't familiar with cotton filters, K&N's are actually white cotton... it's the oil that gives them the colour. When you clean them the aim is to get them back to white, then let them dry before spraying them with the oil and giving them that lovely colour again.

If I had a clio with a panel filter I'd bung a K&N panel (or similar) in the original box, and if I wanted a bit more induction roar I'd pull off a cold-feed pipe. Cheap, cheerful, and probably the best bang-for-buck ratio.

I reckon there's no definitive answer TBH....

Don't bother messing around with it. Induction kits may sound better but will just lose you power.

Exactly JCC
If you want a induction kit/filter for the noise then you should be driving a 1.2
If you want noise, then mtfu and get a full system with de-cat

Induction noise combined with exhaust noise is win though.

There's nothing at all to be gained, power wise, from any induction set up. ALL you will gain is noise. so it's your choice.

well best way 4 noise is by takin the cold air feed off the air box what connects 2the acoustic valve

found out when i tore my pipe

I agree. I run full stainless k-tech with Decat... So at least Austin'll be happy ;)

This is what I thought when I plumped for the 57i years ago... Turns out that although you may not gain anything, it's entirely possible to loose power.
