PAS pump

Hi everyone, I've got a whining noise from the PAS pump when cold starting it gets a little quieter after 3-6 seconds and goes completely after operating the steering a few times left to right (car moving). Fluid level is ok but I've no record of it ever being changed. Anyone had any experience with similar sound? Is it the pump on its way or does it just need a fluid change?

If the fluid is discoloured/dark then I would try changing that first, the fluid should be blood red not brown/black. The pumps are quite noisey anyway (whiney) but if its got noticeably louder and the fluid change doesn't quiten it down then it could be the pump. Mine was really noisey, it sounded like a supercharger lmao, once I changed the fluid it was much better so there's hope yet

mines started off slow, made some noise on start up for ages, then started squealing when turning wheels, then got really bad and loud, so replaced. Wasn't a cheap job as I can't do it myself so took it to my local specialists, but at least you know its quality workmanship. Think it was a good couple of months before first noise before it got really bad. Hopefully fluid change will sort it out for you
