PAS steering noise

This has whined ever since ive had it. doesnt bother me too much now really, got used to noises in this french hatch to be quite honest!

What i want to know is, what causes it to whine?

Will it dramatically just 'break' on me?

Could it cause any other damage?

Mine has always whined for a few seconds after start up then quietens down to a very quiet, barely audible whine. Hasn't blown to pieces yet!

When does it whine, just going side to side during normal use or is it only on full lock?
Full lock is nothing unusual for PAS but if it's all the time, check your belt / belt tensioner, have you checked the fluid any bubbles could cause issues, Oh and does it the steering judder at all?
Catastrophic failure is unlikely but I've had a rack disconnect from the chassis on my Carlos Sainz Gt4 Scary? hell yeah...
