Pc Boot-up Problem

Hey all,
My desktop pc has been sitting neglected for some time now (Use the laptop). So I'm letting a friend have it for a while. One problem though, When i turn it on it goes through all the boot-up stuff (DOS??) and does the loading windows screen. It then loads the desktop background picture but that's all!... Then 2/3 minutes later the icons apear and the computer is useable. The mouse moves throughout the waiting time so I wouldn't think it's freezing up.
Any advice on how to rectifiy the problem?

How much softwares on it?? If its trying to load shedloads of programs at boot is slows it right down. Run msconfig, see whats running at startup.

Try hitting control+alt+delete, Windows task manager, Processes, check the CPU bit scroll down, usually System idle process at the bottom will be only thing around 90+

anything else needs ending if not recognised, then search for the culprit & delete.
Had the same problem at a skool i was at today, some ezscan was running of the server each time someone logged onto a client desktop, just froze up, tracked it down to the server, and killed its ass.

maybe its running a lot of Processes at start up or it may be one particular program

click start, run, type msconfig and select diagnostic start up or le start up programs

Cheers for the replys folks. It was on "selective startup" and that had loads of boxes ticketed throughout msconfig so just put it to "normal startup". Thanks alot!
