PC for Video Editing Help

I currently have a laptop i use for editing drone videos and its really starting to struggle with longer videos. its becoming unusable.

videos are 4k, about 1gb per minute and total length of a finished video might be 2mins. but it could be made up of several 1gb videos all editing together.

what sort of PC is recommended for simple video editing, i use filmora. would also need a 4k screen to go with it.

I bought an MSI gaming laptop to do my editing on, crunches through hours of 4-track, 4k, 60 fps footage with ease.

i9 processor, Nvidia 3060 graphics card, only a 1080 screen but 144hz, works well enough for me.

Cost about £1400 IIRC.

4K video is surprisingly heavyweight so plenty of RAM, plenty of fast SSD storage and a strong CPU/GPU combo is important.

You're going to struggle at 500 quid, mate - especially if you want a monitor as well.

it might be a case of computer now with cheap FB sales screen and then 4k monitor at a later date

His laptop doesn't have a dedicated GPU does it? Both would be a huge improvement over integrated graphics

Have a look through eBay. Personally for that budget I'd be trying to find something with a Ryzen 3000 series/Intel 11th or 12th gen CPU and an RTX 3070 GPU or AMD equivalent.

There's a big compromise on options and capability of a laptop over a similar desktop. Most people think they need a laptop - and then proceed to never move it from their desk or table. In which case a desktop would have been far better.

I have a laptop for work - but don't really use it in terms of a screen to work with. It's into a docking station with 2x 27" monitors connected, and a proper keyboard and mouse. I just have the laptop's screen on for Outlook and little else. If work would let me, I'd swap that for a desktop in an instant.

Got mine out of the bin from work, got 2 actually. Dell precision 7740 i7 🤷‍♂️. Slapped a battery in one and 64gb of ram, run VSDC free. Seems ok. My other laptop just cooks itself when I try doing anything video related.

DJI are about to release a new drone, which can capture in 6k. this is going to make my laptop struggle even more!

whilst i get the below isnt top of the range or cutting edge, im assuming it would be way better than my little old laptop (specs above)

It will be considerably better than your laptop, but it might struggle a bit if you're dealing with 6K video data/stream. 16GB RAM is not enough and 8GB GPU VRAM is not enough these days. Ideally, you would want 32GB RAM minimum, a 16GB GPU, and as much fast NVMe / SSD storage as you can afford (probably a couple TBs as 6K video will chew through storage space as well, especially if raw or high quality). The CPU is not too bad.

Yeah, that's a decent spec. The AMD CPU strikes a good balance of price/performance and coupled with the 4070 and 12GB VRAM on the GPU, it will work well. The 64GB RAM is

ive not had a computer with a spinning hard drive for years, ive forgotten how slow they are. it really lets the PC down.

whilst swapping out is pretty straight forward, sadly the spinning hard drive has windows installed on it. the PC has a second drive already installed and this is an SSD.

what are my options for not having to buy anther copy of windows if i swap the hard drive out?

Windows is tied to the motherboard so it will automatically activate when you reinstall and go online.

I never knew that.

So could I use the 1TB M.2 NVMe as the main drive with windows on and the 2TB HDD for just storage?

I wouldn't even know where to start with doing this.
