i just tend to buy them, swap standard parts for 'track parts', do a few track days and then swap the parts back again, usually selling the car for more than i first paid for it!

i never have and never will spend loads on a car as i just dont see the point, especially with clios as its so easy to swap parts with people!

I had this problem on my moped.
Typical 16 year old, new jets, new carb, 70cc kit, gienalli exhaust, new variator, new rollers, new belt, new shocks, body mods, etc etc.
I paid £550 for the bike, it had done about 4000 miles, is was mint.
I spent about £1000+ on it. Now its worth s**t and rotting in my garden.
I actually felt so guilty and wanting to apologise to the bike for what I'd done. LOL

Only 1 year older but I'm not bloody touching the engine on mine in terms of induction, valves, compression, TBs etc. Only thing I want from it is it to look nice, look clean and sound nice. (Hence KTec Exhaust).

I suppose its a learning curve. At the end of the day, if you've got your mind on something and someone says its a bad idea, are you going to give a feck? I know I didn't. Just let them learn the hard way, and laugh.

It does seem a bit crazy to spend loads of money and then sell on but each to there own.

Ive had mine for 5 years now, Ive made some track orientated mods and bought the best i could afford at them time. Id love to do more track days in her but she's a hobby/project and other things come first IMO. Its all paid for and i know if i sell it i'll not get alot so now its just a weekend toy.

Agreed, people modify it to the point where it's either impractical, past the point of no return or they've just reached the point where there's nothing more they can do to modify it.

Its just not practical and become tiresome quickly.

Nah. It was fantastic on track, but too expensive to maintain as a regular track car. Tyres cost a fortune, and the consumables for my brakes are expensive. Not to mention it uses fuel at a laughable rate on track. 7.5mpg around The Rock last November. Plus white paint takes a battering on track with all the flying rubber and marbles hitting the bonnet etc. I'll still use it on track from time to time, but a dedicated Clio with cheap consumable costs would be an ideal track shed

Yeah fair enough. I'm just saying it would have to be an actual track car. A car that has been setup and used on track by someone who knows what they're doing (not suggesting I do BTW). Not a car that's just been slammed on faceless coilovers so it 'looks decked y0).

Good call on the 306! I sold one last year. Only an xSi 8v, but it would have been a great basis for a track chariot. The basic chassis was brilliant! Bodywork was spot-on too

Oh Ok! I have the same problem with my step lad, learning to drive, his dads bought him a 1.1 Saxo, now all he wants to do is modify it. I try to drive it home to him that he will be paying 3 times what the cars worth just to insure it for the first few years etc etc etc and not to waste money on the old s**tter, better to save for a better car for later OR better still, go out and enjoy himself on the town, take a few holidays with his mates etc. Waste of time opening my my mouth really, I know nothing! I try and support in so much as I'm willing to help him maintain his car, that way he'll save money and learn about the mechanical side of things, I've done pretty much every job on a car in my time so nothing is too much so long as it doesn't involve expensive special tooling, but he wants me to teach him how to wire up 'Subs' and 'Neons'!

However, some of the fault lies with me I suppose, I'm a petrol head on 50 plus cars since turning 18. Some of them have been naff, some have been dream cars, others have been dailys. All of them have cost me money or time one way or the other! They've all been maintained by me to the highest degree, now he can see me buying in small 'improvements' to prepare my Cup for a life of occasional commutes and track days, I'm justifying his train of thought somewhat!

One thing is for sure, any money you spend modifying a car might as well be shredded and burnt, it is lost. I do smile when I see lads modifying 1.2 Clios etc though, I bet their parents have given up on the preaching too!

I'm 51 must be the oldest on this or any forum, but always been a petrol head/ motorsport fan, I always say advise once and then let them learn by their own mistakes,I don't work on the car any more except the small jobs, oil change keep it clean, I use it for what it was intended for, bean there done that, can't be bothered with lying on the floor working under the car and pulling engines out etc let others do it know, stated by gez 172 thats the way you should do it.

Sorry, you are not the eldest on this forum, I'm 59 and there is at least one other gentleman of 63+ with a RS Clio. Like you I am a petrolhead (and dieselhead )
I do do most of the maintainance on the cars but not making a a Horlicks of it on silly mods, have other things to spend money on like holidays and trackdays.
Once the pension starts in a year I'll be looking out for another track car, and Ariel Atom is on my wish list.

I made the mistake on building a race car from scracth instead of buying a podium car which would have cost less. However I did it for the experience so I know to let someone else do it next time. I wouldn't go through the headache of sourcing parts, transport and storage etc.

When I sold it I didn't really lose much from what I spent on building it, £500 at max. Lesson from my experience? Race cars don't depreciate as bad as a track car.

I've had my 182 since new, 5 1/2 years now. Apart from an aftermarket exhaust that was purchased due to the original one rotting, it's pretty well standard. I've spent my money on trackdays, and more importantly tuition at trackdays. It's hilarious going past an M3 in your budget family french hatchback, all made possible because some people will spend £30,000 on a car and not £30 on a driving lesson. Yes, I've probably spent thousands on trackdays and lessons, but it's a lifetime investment and it's made me much faster than the same money on mods.

You don't know how glad I am to read that! I am 57 and enjoy my newly aquired 182. I always say if you want to go faster, get some race instruction. Cheaper than mods to the car and worth at least another 50bhp!
Ben Collins got the 182 around the TG track in about 1:33 new and stock! What's not to like?

We all go throught the pointless mods stage of our lives. Then, hopefully, experience tells us what to do and what to leave alone. My Ford F350 pickup. Stock 7.3 t/diesel is 240bhp/350 llbs torque. Now chipped with different injectors and exhaust 425bhp/800lbs torque - fun! My Lotus Europa TC, engine dropped a valve. Sold the old engine fitted a Zetec engine with TB's etc for less than the price of a rebuild of the old engine and gained 80bhp and reliability! So some mods are ok.

Unlike us ,ahem, older ones, most of the Clio owners are very young and want to follow the crowd and have bragging rights when it comes to automotive willy waving at the pub ( if they are old enough) or on here. I reckon most of these mods like coilovers, carbon this and that are a waste of time as Renault got it so right in the first place. Funny how many wheel sets are for sale with cheapo sh*t tyres on!!!

Just read the whle thread, and am feeling like im one of the "idiots" as im just spunking up a load of dosh for the TDF ITB Kit.

My car has a rerally nice interior, has a 197 wheel, recaros etc etc and is already fitted with cams etc.

I can see why people get rid, if i was to strip the car and fit a set of buckets, i think i would get so fed up. As the car is its perfect, with the bodies it can only get better. My car is personal to me, and i cant see how people can spend all this time and effort on a car that they must have cared about and then just forget about it all and sell it. My guess the majority on here have used loans and CC, realsied there up s**t creak and have to sell to clear debt. Mines been cash throughout, and only ever disposable income that i would have spent on the piss anyway!

After the ITB's i regard my car as finished, and i will then be at as many trackdays as i can for the next few years.

If i do anything, it will be buy a s**t diesel to use for carrying stuff for decorating my house! Cars not for sale
