Performance exhaust for Clio mk1 also suitable for other models / cars?

I want to put a performance exhaust on my mk1, but only expect the car to last another couple of years, so would want to transfer the exhaust to another.

Would a performance exhaust for my mk1 be transferable to other Clio models / car models, or are they model specific?

all depends on what you want mate...a full system or a backbox, and if you get a universal one off the shelf, or one made...

universal backbox...come with shims so you can reduce it down to the bore of the center section piping...so yes theyll fit most cars

custom/specific backbox...will have the mounting brackets welding on, and a correct centre bore...doubtful theyll fit anything else bar a mk1...

full systm...specific to each car...

on a mk1...1.2, 1.4 and rsi all have the same bore IIRC, so youll be able to use the zorst on these models....Valver and williams have a diffrent size bore. somewhere like powerflow tho, will make you a full system or backbox thats fairly universal, using a larger bore and using shims to shim it down...alowing some leway in what cars itll fit :)

Thanks, great info!

I've decided I can't justify spending £100s on a full system if it won't fit my next car.

Just a few more questions to help me decide what else I can do.

1. What are the disadvantages of a universal backbox over a custom / specific? There must be a reason that someone would choose a specific exhaust that would be harder to sell on.

2. What work does installing a universal backbox entail? Is it normally a garage job?

3. Will installing a universal backbox make my car sound any sportier?

4. Is there any other way to get a sportier sounding exhaust? I heard that taking the cat off between MOTs works?!

custom specific is made for your car...not just any clio...made for that exact car...100% perfect fit and allignment etc, where as a universal will need time modding, spacing etc to make it sit perfect.

2. What work does installing a universal backbox entail? Is it normally a garage job?
no, its something you can do yourself if you have any commonsence. its just 2x13mm bolts via a clamp holding your backbox on...so it would be a case of unbolting and rebolting ....

3. Will installing a universal backbox make my car sound any sportier?
you should notice a differ in sound..diffrent backboxes give diffrent noises, so it all depends on what you go for. but you should notice a diffrent, spesh on a mk1!

4. Is there any other way to get a sportier sounding exhaust? I heard that taking the cat off between MOTs works?!
take out silencers....taking the cat out increases bhp, and does change the noise of the zorst. however it makes it more raspier than 'sporty'...and wouldnt sound too fabulous with a standard system!

I got a cat back Ashley system on my mk2, only cost £150 inc postage as it was mild steel. Its a great system that doesn't break the bank either.

So really easy to pinch?!

Any idea which brands of backboxes are best known for a nice sound? I'm more interested in sound than looks. I compare a good zorst to my lady. I don't want to spend hours looking at the rear, but want to hear the bleating when I hit full throttle.

will google re. silencers. Does taking the cat out of a standard system sound like Delboys Reliant then?! Other people have said it gives a grunt as opposed to a rasp. Subjective I s'pose.

unless your a trained mechanic not really...it takes abit of wiggling and the likes to get it on the rubbers and to sit properly. even if you know what your doing its going to take a good 15mins...so someones bound to see. also its best to have the car on axel stands/ramps to do it...

powerflow..end off. but im biased.
if your on a budget, rage, savage and cherrybomb all seem to be pretty popular with people on a MEGA budget...mostly found on little chavvy novas with standard cut springs tho lol!

on a mk1 system yes. it will sound like delboys reliant. on a system such as the 182, it will work, but on a mk1 people will just think...whata nail.
