Petrol Gauge

Hi, went to fill my car up at the petrol station the other day and filled it till the pump stopped and wouldn't let me put anymore in. When i got in my car and drove home (a few minute drive) it only shows 3/4 of a tank? its done this twice now. Anyone know if somethings gone or what to do? Thanks.
