ph1 172 or a 172 cup?

ok, iv own a flame red ph1 172 with 107k on the clock, few mods and its a really good little car. however i really like the cups, and i owned one back in 2003 when i bought one brand new, and im finding myself looking at them on pistonheads. basically im getting the itch to change cars again, my last 3 cars were imprezas, and im looking at them as well, however insurance and fuel costs are swaying me towards the cup. what would u do in my position? should i keep the ph1, spend a bit more on it or spend the extra towards getting the newer cup? (from memory the cup also felt faster than my ph1)

People will proberly start harping on about this and that but why spend more money on the same car?
+ your ph1 has already taken its biggest knock in value id run it untill it died personally then look at getting a 197/200 in 2/3 years time when there the same price as a cup is now. That way you will notice a big difference

I'd take the Cup, if only for the aesthetics, especially on the interior. Other than that, it's probably not worth it.

Sometimes a change is good...

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
If buying one or the other, I'd say Cup. If I already had a phase 1, I wouldn't sell to buy a Cup..

thats what im starting to think, they are basically the exact same car only imo the cup looks nicer, id end up getting bored of the performance with the cup as well, last car was a mint 300bhp scoob and im starting to get the subaru itch again, so cheap just now.

There's only 14kg difference between them plus the Ph1 has the better interior. But the Cup has it's chassis which should be a little better although the tyres are pricier being 16s compared to 15s. Not much in it therefore. I'm in the same position, sort of. I have another engine to go in my Ph1 (more of an adventure than something I have to do) and I'm looking to buy something while the Ph1 is in bits. I also fancy a Subaru, just to try it and see if it is faster in reality. Which Scoob would you buy? An imported Type RA has caught my eye.

iv had 3 scoobs, 2 modded uk turbos and a version 3 sti from japan, 4dr in white. all great cars, but the jap imports are better, i want a type r 3dr or like you a type ra, much better cars out the box, much closer ratio boxes so accelaration is sub 5 secs to 60, but not very good for motorway driving.

i would keep the Ph1 for the reasons already stated above

I had a classic wrx prior to the cup, i miss it just for the sound but the cup is such a good all round car IMHO - high 30s MPG, handles well, fast, and doesnt need to be molly coddled as much as the scoob (whenever i drove it i was scared it was going to break even though they are bullet proof!) Also as it was a JDM the constant need to be in reach of a petrol station with SUL , i run the 172 on SUL but with that it doesnt matter if you run a couple of tanks of 95. No danger of det with the clio :)

Id be tempted to buy a cup as its newer and i love the colour. They are about the only reasons tbh. But ive spent a fair bit on mine so if i was to sell it would be for a type r/integra as ive allways fancied one

on reflection im going to keep the ph1, i fancy the puremotorsport solid top mounts and strut brace and their air con delete kit then ill go for tdf throttle bodies. should keep me happy for a bit.

Keep the PH1, save up for a Cup. When you have the Cup, lock the PH1 up and keep it mint. 15 years on, put the PH1 on the market and see what you get? No point flogging a PH1 now.

GOOD NEWS EVERYBODY !

Ph1s FTW !!!

  2003 Clio 172 Cup
Most people are saying keep the Ph1, but i've never had one of those, only ever had ph2's so I will say go for the Cup just to be different! Either way both are great cars!

If it's just because the cup looks newer... Why don't you do a front end swap? Sell your wings, lights, bonnet and bumper (and the front frame) and fit ph2 parts? It'll be a little project for you, it'll scratch your itch and if you want it to be light, scrap the interior :)

Fun little project and you'll probably find a new love for your car!

I was thinking about selling mine a few weeks a go but then I bought turinis and a cup spoiler :p

Keep the ph-1. Having owned both there's not that much difference between the two in regards to the way they drive. Just the aesthetics where the Cup has the ph-1 beat baring the interior. IMO of course :p

yeah decided would be pointless to sell. especially at the current market values. going to spend some cash on it and improve it even more.
