Ph1 172 Rust

Just chatting to a guy re a ph1 I’m interested in. I don’t know if it’s on here or not. Anyway, it’s got some rust in the filler cap - to me it looks like surface which doesn’t bother me as I’d get it painted.

Anyone any experience with some rusting here? They’re old cars now so I know it will be difficult to find one that’s split mint.

That looks to me like it's on the surface of a seam, so I'd be pretty confident to say that the tin worm is set deeper in than it's showing. Only real way to tell how far into the qtr panel it is, is to remove trim panels and stuff.

Thanks for the reply.

Yep. The rust will be between the 2 layers, even if painted it will come back through.

As above, any that's made it to the visible panels on the car has more than likely made its way through from somewhere behind....

friend had an 07 campus and it was much worse than that so some hold up extremely well

Rust there seems to becoming quite common now.

I think it's a pattern that occurs in a lot of cars - they start to suffer rust at around the same point in their lives, which is usually around the time they are getting cheap, which means loads get killed off, leaving only a few left :(

Happened with the RS Escorts and Fiestas, happened with the mk1 Clios, looks like it's happening with the 172s... Makes me sad!

I waxoyl’d my 182 behind the rear quarter cards to protect the sills, the question is how does water get in, that hole that you can see was full of road dust so how it’s getting in is beyond me, it must lead somewhere? As for the petrol flap mines also clean but I’m gonna give it the waxoyl treatment at some stage. Shame to see these cars rust.

Very common, dirt and crap builds up on the filler neck, holds moisture and eventually rusts through from inside. Drill the rivets out and the captive bolts for the filler cap (utter arse), treat it from both sides and paint, bolt the filler and cap assembly back on (dont need to use rivets). My ph2 is also rusting on the sills, around the fuel tank/rear beam mounts, and some random areas were underseal has been compromised.

I believe it comes from the holes for the side strips or the roof gutter strips and runs down.

I'm afraid to take my side skirts off. No rust if you can't see it!

I once made the mistake of having a peek inside when I removed the rear interior "door" cards. It will need attention some day :(

I’m not sure how far it’s gone on the sills , but I dread looking at the fuel filler neck .

Frightening isnt it @barnesautos ! Its amazing how they vary. Both my garage queen and the track car are as clean as a whistle under there..! Then you get the monster in the pics.. :anguished: :grimacing:
Is that even fixable??

If so, at what cost??

I know welding is joining two bits of metal to create one, but surely with that level of rust, you could effectively just lift the entire outside skin of the car off the floorpan? lol

I fear mine is that bad 😧 😧

easily fixable. Scares a lot of people but its just a time consuming job to do properly, all the metal panels required to fix it are readily available

As mentioned, it could be fixable.. Replacement sill sections are available from the like of Euro Car Parts for about £42. The new section is big enough in height to cover the removed section of rust.

This car, however.. will be scraped once we have everything off it we need.

Easy if you have a welder, the tools and the know how...

Please don't post images like this.

I'm scared.

Haha.. no point pretending its not there.. Well worth popping the outer sill cover off for a look if you have concerns mate. Its only held on by a few rivets underneath. Just have a rivet gun and rivets to hand to pop it on again. :)

But for a Mk1...??

Anything is fixable!
I've repaired a hell of a lot worse.
That is incredible :fearscream: I bow to your skills!

That must cost easily £1k plus to do at 'Joe Public' costs, though, surely??
