PH1 vs PH2 photoshoot. My first lowlight shot!

Any feedback would be really appreciated on these pictures. First time I have shot low light and in Raw. Also decided now that I am SLR'd up I should get Flickr as photobucket does have a tendency to destroy pictures a bit...

Big thanks to Rob for donating his PH1 for some pics and taking me out for a spin :)

Hope you enjoy and anything constructive please feel free to input or criticise as I am still learning loads!

007 looks over exposed?

004 looks HDR'ed as well. Either way, not bad stuff for a first attempt :)

Awesome stuff Sam!

Some really nice shots there, I'm glad I bothered with the tyre shine (I normally get moaned at on here for not putting any on)

005 being my favourite (shame about my mullered splitter or the close up would have been nice)

Oh and 004 has some potential if you turn down the brightness or whatever the technical term is... lol!

Cheers mate, was good for me to get some practice in!

I'll have a stab at re-editing some of them and/or will get round to sending you the jpeg files over at some point now I have converted them (or help yurself off of my flickr account if thats possible?!)

Any sign of our new recruit this weekend?

Nice shots TEG, stumbled across some of you BW stuff before!! If I'd have known you'd have been up for dishing out some tuition I'd have had you there in a flash (*excuse terrible pun).

Re the mazda...I had a massive light trail fail so something for me to read up on!! I managed to get Rob's tail lights in quite a nice shot but wouldn't capture the car at the end of the trail, as if the ambient light was too much to capture it! More practice definitely required on my part.

How long was the car stationary for...?

That one for instance, was 30 sec shot.. with 15 or 20 seconds stationary to start with, to give you some idea what you need to do.

I can nick bits of your flickr account, but not in a great res, I'm hardly a photoshop pro anyway (and I think you can edit much more in raw)!

Any of my dash/seats? :)

If TEG comes along next time, he can show you some stuff (he's taken some really good shots of mine and can do the light painting stuff)

Two failed attempts both at F16 I think.... shutter roughly 20/25 seconds. Trail for 12-15 seconds at a slow driving pace and then a stationary car at the end of the shot in frame for another 8-10 seconds

Not sure what was going wrong other than the trail I was trying was far too complex to start off with (grand plan of weaving between a few pillars and ending up parked)

The point of RAW is that it's uncompressed / un-fiddled with. Jpegs are RAW files from the sensor, which are compressed and conditioned based on your settings .. i.e.: Landscape mode, +2 contrast, +1 sharpness... etc etc.....

Rob, I didn't even notice your seats in the shots. It's dark, and they're black. Close the windows, then using a polariser to see through them. Job done... hopefully.

Great shots for a first proper attempt. Nice to see photos like these with a corrected white balance!!!

Be careful with the HDR effect, unless it's done properly, which I've yet to see for automotive shots, it looks really amateur.

My only suggestion would be to experiment with your composition a bit, and not place the car, or the area of interest, smack in the middle of the frame. Remember the rule of thirds :)

Valued input cheers!! Was dreading the WB comments to come flooding in! Glad I managed to nail it on that front!

Rob lives in chinos and espadrilles!

Thanks Dan, the white balance can be accredited to your guide!

RE: HDR - Now that I am starting to take slightly better photos I hope to move away from the heavy processing and rely more on the quality of the shots.
RE: Composition - Thanks for the suggestions, that's really useful :) Something I definitely need to improve on rather than moving round the car taking various angles... My creative mind is somewhat lacking atm!

haha glad you found the guide useful :)

By all means have a play with HDR, but just be careful. For automotive shoots, the main editing I do is removing distracting things on the backgrounds like signs, dirt etc. Then basic curve, contrast adjustments etc

Having a creative composition can be really tricky, walk around your location before shooting and think where you can place the car. Then experiment with different compositions.
