Picture Quality C&C

I'd like some C&C on my recent photos. I'm using a 500D with Sigma 17-50. Then running them through iPhoto.

They look good on my iPad, but too bright & soft on my desktop, which is irritating me. What PP would you do different?

I'm not sure if it's my eye, or my expectations are too high for this camera?

I just checked the original of the first shot at 100% and it does seem soft. Could be out of focus or unsteady hands? That lens will be sharp in the centre at f4. Try a test on a tripod with steady shot off, use 10 second timer and manually focus. If it's sharp start by adding in the variables you just removed until you find the culprit!

On a side note your wife does not need a bobble hat obscuring her beauty!

Thanks for the advice. I'm hoping it was unsteady hands in the cold.

The final shot was taken standing against a wall, and I think it's the sharpest?!

Post an original from the camera that hasn't been through your ipad, if you can also take a crop @ 100% in the focus area that'd really help.

Looking at the EXIF the shutter speed is borderline for handheld at 50mm.

That's the same image, straight to Flickr from the laptop at full size. I'm not sure how to crop at 100%.

As for the original 4 above, they are all handheld, and I realised I didn't have image stabiliser switched on which wouldn't help I guess.

And yes, there is a touch do 'smoothing' added to the face.

When using a tripod, always use at last the 2-sec timer ;)

For me, they look a bit soft, maybe they're OK... top one is spot on, but all have toooo much vingetting for me.

Not too bright though .. iMac at full blast, they're fine. Is your brightness on full when you edit ? Try editing in full screen perhaps...

100% crop is taking a section of the photo at actual resolution but I've just seen you have full res images on flickr [except the iphones that are private?]

Having a look they aren't eye popping sharp 'strike a pose' could just be a combination of dull light, minor hand shake and software skin smoothing and vignette making it look soft.

Rear of the rear looks out of focus & the car looks plenty sharp.

Don't be afraid to pump up the ISO a little, 100 is very low and going to 200 or 400 would have more than doubled the shutter speed.

Thanks for the feedback guys, I really appreciate. I'll have another play this weekend with your advice.
