pikey ecu reading / playing

  Trophy #267
forgive me for asking this as I have no intention of treading on ppl's toes here or for making money, but:

afaik, a group n ecu is effectively a normal ecu which is not paired with immobiliser (done on 1st ignition on ?) and is progged with a diff ecu firmware.
now i have plenty of electronics experience and have quite happy to remove the 29f400 psop device and read it in my progger. now i could do this with my ecu nps, or do it to a virgin group n or a spare ecu (assuming hw is identical, just ecu firm different) from any (similar age) clio ecu from a scrapyard, prog with virgin group n firm and then put in my vehicle and flog on the original for somewhere cost thus giving me a fairly cheap ecu remap / upgrade.

my reason for wanting to do this are partly cos im tight, have the ability & equipment and because I can barely have something for 5 min b4 taking it to bits and trying to break it.

what im not sure about is where I stand legally (duplication of copright material ?) & ethically ( u lot flaming me for wanting to do this) so thoughts on this please

/me waits for list of replys saying 'im not selling any ecu to that tight f00ker'

Do it mate. If you have the knowledge and capabilities, why not. As long as you are not making commercial gains from it I wouldn't see it as a problem considering both ECU's would have been yours at some point to do with what you wished.

sounds fair enough to me, good on you for having a go yourself (if you know what you're doing)

don't break it!

Yup, that would work. Good when you got experience with TSOP's;)

heh ta (just noticed your a member on shack pmurray :) )

just to get this 100%, I am ok getting a diff ecu of similar type and can go with reflashin the flash from there ? (my 172 is a clio II cb1n )- just wondering what scope of age / spec that gives me to search for @ scrapper.
I dont fancy playing with mine atm due to warranty issues etc and off chance i break it :p

I assume the equiv group n is the best approach for this manner ? any other things i should bear in mind ?

my mate has been trying to remap on the cheap (their lupo 1.4 16v with a turbo strapped onto it) for ages.

not going well to say the least! lol
they have shed loads of cash dont know why they just dont get someone who knows what they're doing to do it

dont think they'll get it right between them

Lo Rv m8,,, yes this is possibile BUT you would need to make sure you had the correct ECU software revision for your car OR the dump you take would not run your car.

RE copyright ,, tuners CAN NOT make copyright on ANY ecu software ,
Why !!!

Because they them selfs have ONLY edited the manafactures origanal code, there fore the tuner is NOT the sole owner of the software in the first place and CAN NOT make a claim for copyright

Hope thats a bit clearer

Regards bell

PS dont even go and start looking at a USED ecu for using the dump on another car , it wont run.

Unless of course you can remove the IMMO data from the several places stored and then correct the final chq for the file.

Start with a VIRGIN ecu

right seems i heading in the right direction then :) ty for the replies.
@16vJon - if that ecu will do the job / works nps then yes seems a good starter for me :)
time to go looking for the right group n ecu then methinks :) .... ne1 want a cheapish 172 group n ecu when im done lol

  Trophy #267
well, basically whatever list price i paid minus a sizeable chunk bearing in mind it would have to match whatever ecu range mine is (cb1n) but i havent done it yet so ive not got to that point yet.
The next bit is finding the correct ecu (and pref cheapest). So far looked at bbtuning, hillpower and fastchip in the netherlands which all are getting cheaper, however, there seem to be a few variants ie some posts on here mention specific ecu for racing cam, one for induction system and 1 for generic. Is this true ?

Where are the ECU's on a 172, and are they difficult to remove/replace?

Under the bonnet....just look behind the battery and you'll see a black metal case/cover over the ecu.

got 16vjon's ecu today and promtly setabout whipping flash off - omfg what a ballache that is !!! 1) covered in varnish makes ir marginally easier than 360 dvdrom firmware chip to remove lol 2) plastic pcb job so trying hard not to reduce ecu into a smouldering plastic lump 3) any heat i do create is dispersed asap by the bloody aluminium backplate grr.
neroad, finally got the bugger off (with a bit of friendly encouragement from bellautos ;) ) just waiting for adapter.

regarding source of group n , prob go with fastchip but not got any reply from email or from various phone calls today, just awaiting confirmation from them b4 ordering and sending ecu

update:
got adapter checked on current ecu and working nps (csums verified) so sent ecu off and hopefully back by weekend for me to play :)
Intend to dump returned full group n ecu on return to apply to mine so anyone after a freshly returned one ?

bit of a delay but finally got ecu back (plus been away on hols)
OMFG how much of a b**ch is the cover to shift !!! gave up in end due to spots of rain and got hassled by window salesman :/
Will try again Sat mornin

ok cover really is a bugger to get off, brute force and ignorance required. Messed about and removed battery etc to get at old ecu and swap.
then i found possibly a problem, my ecu's dont look the same...
i swapped anyway and test but car wouldnt start with immo light on red all time on dash.
Do i have the wrong ecu ? thoughts pls

Cos the ecu on the left looks to be from a 182 and the ecu on the right is a sirius 34 from mk2 172.

btw rob nice trainers.

Hmm, possible but looking at the dump it looks like it has immo data in there.

Not 100% sure fastchip will send an unlocked ecu, they might read the one you send them first.

Just a thought though

@RV have you pulled the chip from your ecu yet?

Cheers

Second thoughts, the file you read from this has NOT been modded at all and is paired to a car!

Ring fastchip and tell them it not work

Cheers
