Please help identify this noise (video)

  Looking for 182
Hi all,

I just bought a 182 and there are some odd noises coming from the engine bay which I didn't notice when viewing or testing the car.

Here is the video:

Now, I'm fairly certain there is SOMETHING wrong with the power steering. But when sitting idle there is another noise which I am unsure about. Both belts have been changed in the last year or so but I don't know if the PAS problem would also make a noise whilst sitting idle and not moving the wheel.

Any ideas?

Well the trouble is I don't know if it has become heavier. I only picked it up yesterday and it's felt the same since then, I just didn't notice any odd noises on the way home.

Could the PAS pump cause the odd noise whilst idle as well?

I thought so much, thanks Mark.

Would a faulty PAS pump cause the slight whining noise even when idle and not moving the wheel? I am a bit of a noob but I imagine that the PAS pump/belt are still doing SOME work even when I am not steering, right?

Yeah because it's always running along with the belt running it. Does sound nasty, don't it

Ok cool, I'll take it to Renault tomorrow and see how much it will cost to sort out. I can get a PAS pump myself, but I wouldn't have a clue how to fit it :(

Could possibly be one of the Aux Belt Pulleys knackered thats whirring away ?

Does sound PAS related tho.

Get both checked out.

Sounds to be the PAS pump to me, as its a solid sound on idle then when you turn the wheel that sound gets louder, I'de put money on the pump!

I'll be going to Renault in my lunch today to get it all listened to and then I guess booked in. I hope it doesn't cost too much to fix seeing as I only picked it up from the seller on Sunday :(

I'm annoyed with myself for not noticing it before!

Well, my local Renault have confirmed it is the PAS pump. I put a long screwdriver onto it as well and can hear the noise magnified through the end of it.

They have quoted......wait for it......over £650 for parts and labour to replace the pump and belt!!

I'll be calling around tomorrow to get other quotes. How much should I expect to pay for the parts and labour?

I just thought I would update this thread on the off chance that it helps someone else in my position in the future.

I've got it booked in tomorrow to have the PAS pump replaced. I didn't realise that the PAS pump runs off the AUX belt, so I had asked for a quote to replace this, although it was only done 12k miles ago so I think I'll just get the pump replaced and not the belt.

The quote I got for the pump and belt was £430, so should hopefully be a bit less than that without the belt. I'll update again when I know if this has fixed it.

I'm kind of talking to myself here now but just on the off chance this helps anyone; replacing the PAS pump has fixed my problem.

Thanks

Bit of a shitter that mate considering you haven't had it a week. Problem is the F4R is a whiney engine when perfectley heathy so its hard to notice faults sometimes.

Very bad practice to remove a belt and then use the same 1 again. I personally would have changed the belt, they're only around £15. It's the belt tensioner that is the expensive part and it will be fine without changing!

Oh, I didn't know that.

Oh well, too late now.
