  Clio 182
right guys
got a 1.2 16v 2001 clio
come to it this morning an its missfireing it has done this before but i solved this with a simple coil pack change
so i thought it was the coil pack again so i changed that no difference so i checked th plugs and cleaned them up this made no difference so checked loom at the back but i have already covered these wires up by cutting a hose pipe and wraping round wires to prevent the box rubbing through

anyone have any other ideas?
i desperatly need me car tonight aswell :(
any help would be great
thanks in advance
benn

ht leads?
or are they together with the coil pack?

also did you just clean the plugs or buy new ones?

I'd be buying new ones if you need it for tonight

If you're sure the coilpack is not the cause then it needs a diagnostic i'm afraid as guessing is pricey

Defo not coil or plugs.
So maybe tappets or injectors? Could this be the cause ? Or possible crack in inlets?

Still not sorted guys crankshaft sensor was also changed today due to the timing not advancing or retarding properly. Also had it plugged in. Me and an ex renault mechanic still Carnt fine the problem lol
Any help would be great thanks

What sort of plug leads are they? Some of the cheap ones break down and can track across the insulation. I fitted competition leads on my 172 and they are fine.

The coil was only new the other day so I dont think it would have broken down alreay

Was it a genuine Renault coilpack? If not then trust not! I've seen cheap coils fail 3wks out of the box when customers "cheap out" on me and this time of year plays havock with ignition systems. Has anyone even checked the simple things like plug gaps and primary and secondary winding resistance values yet on the coils?

What really needs to happen, IMHO, is a proper diagnostic session; I'm personally not a fan of Snap-On scanners - Don't get me wrong I'm not kicking them to the s**t bin as they do the job well meaning *most* of the information they supply is correct but for the price they cost they're mediocre at best! There's so much information the SPX CLIP provides that the aftermarket kit cannot even see which makes life easier for people actually diagnosing rather than "Code Reading". It also needs looking at with more than just a scanner; Injectors, Crank Position Sensor, Ignition Drivers all need scoping to see what's occuring to rule out wiring, connection or actual component faults.

Cheers for the advice mick got a scope at collage so will have a look at all them.
Although im now down to 2 cylinders. So could this mean its more likely electrical instead of mechanical?
Thanks benn

It's a 1.2 16v Clio II so could be anything and really needs looking at with a very keen eye. It could be a poor earth or even a short loom issue as they're known for wires rubbing thru and wires snapping so it could be a simple continuity issue. It could also be a general ignition driver fault but a scope session will soon confirm or deny this. I fixed a Fiesta Zetec with this very problem yesterday after a faulty coilpack backfed the trigger lines and roasted the PCM drivers so this could also be your fault!

To be thorough, I'd also check the engines compression to rule out a mechanical fault.

If its down to 2 cylinders then its more than likely an ignition coil issue as these are wasted spark iirc.
have you pulled one lead off at a time whilst engine is running to determine which cylinders are missing?
If its 1 and 4 or 2 and 3 then would be looking down the ignition side.
Scoping, scanning etc is all very well but very time consuming when it could be a very basic fault and easy enough to find with nothing more than your hands and a keen ear.
aftermarket coil pack are generally rubbish and cause more problems than anything. If changing the coil pack cured the fault last time then perhaps check this first.

Dave, very good point and normally i'd agree but as per the OP he's already done a couple of coil packs with no difference... deffo needs scoping at this point.

Mine was doing this, turned out to be the throttle sensor, got that fixed and the car has been perfect ever since!
