Polishing Ph1 172 Gearknob help

Can anyone give me some tips on getting my Ph1 gearknob all shiny again?
I have tried with some T Cut Metal Polish I found in my shed, but it wouldn't cut through the tarnished aluminium.

Whip it off, stick it on a drill (make an arbor for it), run some wet and dry on it going up the grades, metal polish to finish.

Ph1 gear knobs are a silver finish as standard. I'd be inclined to paint it rather than re-polish it.

Also to remove it you have to tackle it from underneath as I belive the ball is heavily glued on and many have ruined them trying to remove them.

Cool, I will give it a go. I was hoping to get away with some clever polish, but it does look in pretty bad shape.

The last Ph1 I had, the knob had been polished to an (almost) mirror finish, I miss that!

In that case... Do what I said minus whipping it off and the drill.
