Poorly 172 - grinding noise on acceleration / decceleration

  None
Hi,

New to this forum, seems like a good place to come to! - I recently bought a ph2 172 and for the first fortnight it ran like a dream, but the dephaser pulley has just gone and there's another issue too which I'm trying to diagnose, so wondering if anyone can shed some light on it:

Since the dephaser pulley went I've noticed that when I press the throttle pedal there's a bit of a grinding noise momentarily coming from the engine bay, and it returns when I take my foot off the pedal. Also seems to happen when I start the engine, hard to describe the noise, it's quite loud but it doesn't sound toooo significant - the weird thing is if the car is out of gear and I press the accelerator it doesn't make the sound.
Is it to do with the dephaser? It sounds kinda similar to the diesel-like noise that now makes.

Can't guarantee that it started at the same time as when the dephaser went, may be coincidental

Also does it sound like it's safe to drive as it is? Don't want to do any damage to it, I'm already dreading that ~£650 for the belts and dephaser!

Cheers,

Where are you from matey? It might be worth getting it in to one of the many specialists that are on this site for a good look as problems like these are nigh on impossible to diagnose without really seeing the car. It could be connected to the dephaser failure but it could also be something else and I'd hate for it to be something serious that claims the engines life after "The Internet" opinions tells you it's fine to keep driving.

Thanks mate that's good advice :) Bit gutted truth be told, just forked out for new brakes, tyres (new they were on the way out) and also MOT / insurance, and thought I had everything in check!
I'm based in Docklands, London - can get to Essex / Kent or anywhere in London easily, definitely want to get it looked at so that nothing serious fails!
