popping/knocking noise

when starting the car up it makes a noise like a pop or knock as if there is slight play in some thing, will this be the strut top fault and do the washers cure this.

just from starting the engine up, or from moving off?

possibly exhaust leak if former, or pads in calipers may be?

moving mainly, it does it whilst driving aswell

only in a straight line, or only whilst steering?

the rack makes a 'cracking' noise if the bush clamps aren't tight enough
