Positive Terminal

D

Dj Annihilation

Hi Guys

My positive battery terminal seems to be pretty loose even with it being tightened up as much as possible.

I also noticed there's like a large block attached to the terminal like a copper colour, I think I have heard some people call it like a fuse? I haven't a clue, not good with electrics.

If I wanted to replace the terminal, would the block thing come with it? If not how do I go about getting one of these, reason I ask is that it appears to be damaged, is like a hole going through it lol...guess it has a purpose, cant say all my previous cars have had this...

I guess I could go to Renault to get it but didn't know if there were any other options, eBay etc as I was unable to find these bits anywhere.

I can get a picture if it will help but hopefully you will know what I am talking about.

Thanks in advance.

Louis

They all it a fuse because it is... 120A iirc

You need a new battery terminal which can be purchased from Renault.

Do you know how much they are?

No, the fused link is part of the starter motor wire. The terminal is just that.

I'm prob being dumb...so if I buy the terminal it won't come with that block on top the terminal?

If not how do I get hold of that? As it seems to be broken, I need to replace the terminal and block thing.

Thanks

It's that block thing poking out the top of the cover:-

doesnt work. the bit that clamps to the battery post. you want. i expect
the fuseable link only comes with the loom

Don't think I can get it to load.

It's literally under the red positive terminal protector on the battery like copper coloured and rectangular.

It's what you see when you open the positive cover...it's attached to the terminal

I just need to know how to get it ... Do I need to order two parts or is it part of the terminal?

Thanks Daniel :) I'm obv retarded lol!!

It's that thing right under the cover I need along with the terminal...that's if it's separate lol

Theres two wires that bolt onto the terminal I think one off the fuse box to the right of the battery, one is from the engine from the left.

Its hard to work out which part you say has a hole in? best thing you can do is take a picture tomorrow and upload it.

Edit:

Found a pic to upload. Some will need to confirm but I would think when the bolt on the right is undone both leads can be lifted off the nut. Which part of your terminal is damaged?

Sill question but have you tried undoing the clamp, knocking the clamp down further onto the battery terminal with a hammer and screw driver (gently). Then doing back up again? That clamp is not slid over the post enough.

It's that thing right next to the ecu holder the square shaped thing that has a hole, I need that and the terminal clamp thing. It's on the alternator part not fuse box side...

I hope that explains it better

Cheers

The fuse is part of the wiring loom and available only as part of the charge/starter circuit cable.

The battery terminal itself is available separately

Lol so that bit I'm on about is the fuse and I can't buy separately?

Nope, it's part of the cable "assembly" which I *believe* is around £48 + vat

D

Dj Annihilation

Ouch I guess I would then just take the fuse off the end and keep the cable as a spare lol.

Expensive fuse lol

You could remove it and add your own connector but the fused link is there for a reason. It will work without though.

Oh right so just link direct to the terminal? What's the worse that could happen mate? I don't recall all my cars having this fuse ??

Thanks for all your help btw....

It's there to act as an anti-surge protection device whilst the starter is in use. Worst case it *could* try to shag your sister or damage the ECU but they are extreme examples.

Oh right....there seems to be mixed thoughts on this one...I will see what renault come up with and come back to you all lol.....i didnt think this would be such a pain lol

I just hope it will be easier than buying a new engine loom lol

pretty sure the fuse block disconnects from the terminal, ie its not one piece.

Yes, it unbolted from it... Is that not what we're already saying?

The main cable and fuse block are one and the terminal connector is another part.

FFS do I need to take pictures and label them?

I dont know, it seems like the OP dosnt seem to realise the fuse is not connected to the terminal and is only held in place with the nut. I also can see why he would remove the fuse, if the end has become worn, cut the cable right next to the fuse, strip about 1cm of insulation away from the cut cable, unbolt the fuse from the terminal, expand the B shape metal that holds the wire in place, remove old bit of wire, insert new wire into expanded B shape metal area on the fuse, clamp the fucker. re-attach fuse. Job done.

However I thought the OP was about a loose batery terminal and not a poor connection between stator motor wire and the fuse. In which case, rmove the nut holding everything on the terminal, remove terminal, insert new terminal, reapply everything under the terminal nut and tighten. Job done.

Or just get a small hose clip, cut it to a nice circle that fits on the terminal and connect the postive connection over the hose clip piece and tighten it all up. it will cut out your slack and hold everything nice and tight.
