Potential Buyer looking for some help!!! 172

  Clio 182 FF
Hi haven't posted here for a long time now but joys of life means I'm looking to down size a little in the car department and keep something a little fun still.

How little can you spend on a ph1 clio 172? as id ideally like to sell the skoda and buy one with a nice chunk of money left over, but I don't then want to have to spend all the money to maintain and fix bits!

Would £2500 be waaay to little? mileage doesn't bother me and regular maintenance doesn't bother me but big bills do so don't want to buy one for too low and spend all my time fixing it or worrying about a big bill that may come.

Also how much more are the ph2 172's worth over the ph1 as I really like the understated looks of the ph2 without the twin exhausts etc that come with the 182.

TIA:star:

Hi mate.

In October last year i paid £3300 for a 172 with 72000 miles and a few subbtle mods.

Just as a guide price.

It was up for £3850 but hadnt had cam belt done so got it down a bit. Its possible i still paid over the odds but im happy with the car.

should be able to get a mint standard ph1 for your price range.

have a look on piston heads. you wont regret buying one :)

just make sure they have had the cambelt and regular services done. It'll cost you upwards of £400 for a cambelt change.

you will always get wear and tear on the steering wheels, grab handles, and seats so dont be put off by that.

do i need to worry about mileage as ill be keeping the car for about 2 years and doing a few miles in it, is it better to avoid 100k+ cars? as ill probably put 20k on it pretty easily in two years.

no, no need to worry about mileage as long as its been looked after.

its common knowledge that they get faster the more miles they do ;)

ive had mine for 4 years next month on 100k now and is spot on to drive. mine was on 48k when i bought it.

How much do vRS' sell for nowadays? I thought the 1.8T petrol engine'd examples were pretty cheap now - don't think it would leave you a great deal of cash left over?

well I've seen a few going for 4k providing they're low mileage and good condition, so will leave me with around 1k to help pay off some bits.

Ah right, cool. Bare in mind that Ph1's are 8/9 years old now, so that £1k could well be pumped back into repairing things fairly quickly!

To be fair, Ph2 172's are also now between 5 and 8 years old. You could think about it as the ph1 has had 1K spent on it already on engine mounts etc where as the ph2 will need it soon.

Age wouldn't worry me tbh. Plenty of older cars on the road still running well.

i would happily go for a ph2 just thought they maybe a stretch to far for 2.5-3k and id end up with a dog.

how often do the engine mounts need replacing? whats the issue with them? and how much would i expect to pay for an independent to do the work?

what are the common issues otherwise with the ph1 clio 172?

As said as long as maintenance has been religious on the Clio itll be fine. My Phase 1 is on 54k at the moment and hasnt put a foot wrong in the 12,000 miles its covered.

I love it dearly and plan to run it until she dies tbh, all this nonsense about them being 8/9 years old is nothing to worry about if its been cherished tbh

The biggest worry you will have is finding one thats had the belts changed, but with your budget i reckon you could un-earth a gem

All the issues with the Phase 1 are consistent across the RS range (bar the 197 so far anyway) They mis-fire due to a faulty coil pack or HT Leads or it could be a faulty injector.

Window regulators seem to be quite weak aswell (ive replaced two, its more of a nuisance than unreliabiltity)

A knocking noise coming from the top mounts at low speeds, this is normally the nut on top of the turret catching the shocker) This is easily fixed by any garage. im certain that 40% of the cars on here have suffered one of the above faults in one form or other.

They rattle in general but for the money its a damn bargain, im thinking of buying another to completley strip out and track it up

  172 Exclusive... For Sale
Car C looks good and low mileage.

I might be selling my Exclusive, only 78,000 on clock, however needs a cat and cv joint. however current market is putting me off selling up and add to the fact I can't see good road-worthy Phase 1's dropping under £2k ever if they remain unabused.

I mean look at my ex-car 106 Rallye Phase 2, I sold mine for £3200 in 2003, regret it to this day as I can't find a good one for less than £2k at all.
