Pressure washing engine bay

  Fiesta ST200
Some of you may know I have just bought a 200 in pearl white :rasp:

I know it was generally a bad idea to pressure wash the engine bay on my 182 as the ECU wasnt very well protected.

Is it the same risk with the 200? Is there any hints/tips you could share with me to combat this?

if not I will go at it with TFR, a brush and a chamois.

Cheers!

Never understood this, your engine bay consists of metres of electric cable, terminals, fuses and relays and requires spark. Why would you ever want to spray it with a pressurised hose!

Garage i used to work at the owner pressure washed pretty much every engine bay and has never had any problems i personally would never do it.

Wet rag and then metal polish, plastic dressing. Job done... There really isn't much to these engines, it'd take you half an hour max to get it spotless lol. Buy some long brushed for the bits your hand can't fit in

i previously owned a car whose engine was pressure washed by the garage who sold it to me. when i came to service it i found that the plugs werent seated quite perfectly and some water had got in behind them. i'd avoid spraying water in there, especially high pressure.

Ive only ever seen one car have its engine pressure washed. It cause a misfire and shagged some coils.

I wouldnt do it, brake cleaner is your friend

As long as you cover the plug holes, ecu, fusebox and dont jetwash directly any sensors you should be fine. I have jetwashed mine a few times over the years and its been ok,

think what valetors do at dealerships! I used to blast 5-6 a day when i used to do it at main dealer and never had any problems.

Engines are designed to get wet. Go nuts.

Engines are not designed to get wet, they are protected a little to cope with a little spray of the tyres or road, but then the discovered arch liners and undertrays. A bit of spray coming from underneath may be a little different to a pressure aimed directly.from close range. I struggle to see the comparison?

For the hassle and caution needed just use a spray bottle with cloth and or brush and work it properly.

If you use common sense, there is nothing wrong with using a pressure washer under the bonnet.

I've been doing it for 10 years and can count on one hand the amount of problems I've had.

Woukd never dare to pressure wash it. Way I do it is I use APC scrub it then wipe with clean water and dry it all. Then use bumper dressing on the plastic parts to bring out the black. On metal parts i scrub with AG Machine and engine cleaner. works a treat.
