privelege car insurance are shite.

  Renault Clio 1.2
i know your probably thinking 'why is the bell end with them in the first place', well i passed my test in january and needed the cheapest qoute for my 1.2 16v fully comp own policy. got one. cheapest was 2400! which f***s me of more and more when i see dirty chav w*****s in cars ragging them and then nailing them into a tree. anyway, it was the cheapest, had to go for it. i then did my pass plus which they gave me 500 back for, thanx. so in total 1800 own policy on a 1.2 clio.
now that the only thing i actually want to change is putting renault sport allys on my car, they're now saying that they dont allow any type of modification to any car until the driver is 21. f**k that. im surprised anyone actually uses them! i certainly wont be using this OAP's insurance company ever again and look forward to renewing my insurance with a decent company.
when i do im just going to say its already got alloys anyway, instead of faffing around with modification costs.
cheers dave

Re: privelege car insurance are s**te.

Privilege was cheapest for me at £390 (I'm an old git) for a standard 182 after getting quotes from a lot of insurers. A lot of people don't bother modifying their cars so Privilege would make sense.

I'm constantly amazed at the amount of insurance that young drivers must pay nowadays for car insurance. Ouch.

So your tecdhnically driving about with no insurance then, is this what your telling us?
no im saying that im on a priveledge policy until january, where i will change to a better insurance company. the thing is putting renault sport alloys on a renault clio isnt particularly something thats going to cause the world to blow up so i dont understand what there problem is. im not a chav adding some induction kit to make my 1.2 louder, just bloody alloys, dnt understand, and yes insurance for my age group is f**king ridiculous.
but hey its because the majority of my age group cant drive for s**t.

About to take out a policy with them as there the cheapest for me.

You're young most insurers don't cover young lads with mods. You know why? well if you don't go and watch the dickheads peeling out of maccys carpark at night in modded cars to see why they don't. I've been with privilege for a few years now and they've been great. Even better they were happy to cover me with a rollcage fitted (alot of insurers get very funny about cages) and didn't charge me for ANY interior mods I did to the car. Helps being a grown up when you want to fit things to your car ;)

Aren't the 15" and 16" alloys exactly the same on 172s and normal cars? If so, they are standard Renault items are they not (if they're specified as an option at time of ordering car?)

i dont have alloys on my car, wheel trims so gna change them for RS 16 inch alloys. hense its a mod and something that i want back if someone crashes into me.

  Abarth 500 Essesse
Privilege have just given me my cheapest quote so far need to call them and enquire about mods and stuff but looking ok for me, churchill, direct line and others dont touch mods until 25!

Re: privelege car insurance are s**te.

My car insurance don't charge me for having different Renault alloys on my car :p

I was with the co-op (CIS) years ago, they didn't charge me any extra for putting ford alloys on my fiesta (it had hub caps & the alloys were the same size, xr2i wheels)

Maybe give them a call back & say that they renault ones you want to put on it ?

I'd like to say that you get what you pay for with insurance companies but most of them are f*cking idiots to be honest. I know first hand working for one of the biggest ones in the world!

I'm with priviledge, and they have been for the last couple of years the cheapest to cover my 182, I'm now 25.

BUT!!!! I was involved in an accident almost 18months ago and they have done NOTHING when the other driver involved was quite clearly in the wrong.

I have been with them for a few years now and they come out cheaper than anybody else. £400 Quid for the 197

Re: privelege car insurance are s**te.

LOL oh dear...i'm also with them on my R27...£800 last year, £650 this year, i thankya..

23 and 5 years protected ncb by any chance? lol

Nah matey...23, 3 years no claims, an accident that i won't need to declare when my renewal is due either..

I would've prob had 5 years protected but some idiot in a 206 decided it'd be a cool idea to hit my old dynamique on a roundabout therefore the accident was deemed a 50/50 and i lost nearly 2 years NCB..

You where had, f**k me! mine was 1600 on a brand new 07 plate 1.2 fully comp with direct line. Not with direct line now though because of the fact cant have mods.

£485 with privilege, 23years old 6years ncb. Fully comp, protected no claims too. £150 cheaper than anyone else, on a standard 172.

Bit pissed off with them to start with though as i needed to pick the car up fast and they "couldn't" put a cover note in post for me so i could tax it.

Can't believe your getting so upset over a set of wheels! Just go with a different company if your loosing sleep over it.

Just got my renewal through from them £330, always knew being old had some benefits. I'll still be ringing round seeing if someone can beat it though.

But doesn't this yet again highlight the utter b****cks and double standards of a lot of insurers? So a lad on here gets told to feck off because he wants different alloys and yet older drivers like you and me could have a roll cage fitted and plenty of additions inside - just because we're older?

I'm not being funny - but no one buys a roll cage for the car to look 'good'. It's there to do a job and sweeping generalisation or not - if I were an insurer, I'd be far more tempted to bump up the premium of the car with welded pipes in the back - than the car with a bling set of wheels.

It's a simple fact that most insurance companies don't know their Civic Type-R's from their Citreon 2CVs. Mods scare them. And mods from younger drivers make them run for the hills.

The industry as a whole does the absolute bare minimum it has to. To provide an answer to a legal requirement. What it doesn't do in any shape or form it to provide a rational, sensible and logical reasoning as to where they get their actual premiums from.

Take my last interest in Evos where an Evo VI Extreme worked out at the same premium as a standard VI GSR. Mmmm. Let me think. Not knowing the difference between 'arse' and 'elbow' springs to mind.

(rant over) ;)

I never said the rollcage addition had no cost, I didn't ask them what (if any) premium increase their would be. I asked if they covered rollcages and they did. The interior mods to my car were bucket's harness' stripped rear and a 320mm non airbag wheel none of which increased my premium.

There is reasoning in the age vs mods debate. As a demographic someone with 10/12 years driving experience and 6/7/8 years no claims is less likely to put a car into the back of someone or on it's roof than an 18/19 year old with no no-claims and 1 or 2 years experience.

You can't argue with statistics and this is what their premium is worked out on. I'm sure young lads with modded cars probably have a higher rate of claims or simply the payouts are bigger when they do, hence some insurers wont cover or charge silly amounts for cover.

I agree some things make no sense, some cars which should be cheaper or dearer don't always work out that way. As for the evo example it may be due to the number of them and the claims logged against that model? If there aren't many then it's harder for them to quote in comparison because as you say they don't actually understand the differences between the models.

The thing that you could argue is wholly unfair is the fact you could take twins living in the same house, driving the same car, with the same experience, no of claims against them etc and if one was male the other female the female would pay less purely because of her gender.

V. true. But there's this immediate :nono: :nono: :nono: attitude to young drivers - no matter what they do to their car. You could argue that larger wheels have a larger contact patch on the road and also make the car slower in acceleration, thus less likely to crash? Obviously, that's a tenious link - but there's some reasoning behind it.

I've even heard of some drivers getting penalised for fitting better braking systems on their cars. That is absolutely ludicrous. Again, my insurance company didn't bat an eyelid 'due to my age' - lol. But you're making the car safer as a result and yet you're getting dry-bummed for doing so? Are they assuming that everyone with new brakes is likely to start-stop-start-stop aggressively now, because they can?

That example of the twins is a classic. But again. They will probably base that assumption on statistics as well.

Guilty before you've even started - in their eyes.

You could also correctly say that makes them more dangerous in the wet, which in the uk means most of the year.

Thats what they'll assume, they could argue why do you feel the need to improve the brakes you have. Surely the manufacturer should provide suitable braking for the engine, size and weight of the car. There's also the issue that some uprated brakes don't operate as well unless they have heat in them and unless getting the operating temp up (driving hard/like a t**t) then they will be less capable than the OE set up they replaced.

Insurance is a royal pain in the ass though and you do pay out a silly amount of money for them to do no more than provide a piece of paper saying they'll pay up IF you have an accident. They don't repay you or give you some cash back if you go a year without bending the car. But granted if/when you come to pay the money they have to hand over could pale into insignificance to what your premium is each year or even over several.

Good point. Even a mild shunt involving a couple of everyday cars could amount to £thousands. And even more so in this day and age where people will claim for so much as breaking a finger-nail.

I just utterly detest car insurance full stop. And the fact that the industry as a whole is steered as well as Stevie Wonder at the helm of the Titantic, doesn't help my loathing of it either.

It needs a whole shake-up in my mind. But it won't happen. They have us by the balls and they know it. Bastrads. :quiet:

What doesn't help either, is the fact a claim is always hugely exagerated. (And I'm not talking about people claiming whiplash or soft fraud such as claiming they had a laptop in the boot that broke in the crash).

My only insurance acknowledged accident to date is when I went into the back of some woman's 1.2 expression Clio (about 3 years ago as I don't have to declare it this year).

The collision was in low speed bumper to bumper traffic and was completely my fault for not being alert. Her bumper was damaged and I think that's all it was. I rang the insurance a few months later to see if I could pay the cost of the claim so that I didn't lose any NCD. £3000 ffs.

Absolute bullshit tbh, it's almost as if they don't have to try and keep the cost of repair down (I'm pretty sure a new bumper, paint and labour wouldn't exceed £1000 even at Renault) as they get so much profit they don't know what to do with it all. (That's just scepulation btw as I'm no accountant working in insurance.)
