PULSAR GTI-R SUPER BEAST

went to santa pod on sunday to jap fest! all the top jap cars pulling some quality 1/4 mile times! decided that i would look into getting a pulsar gti-r. For those of u that dont know this is a 2.0 16v 4x4 turbo in a car roughly the same size as the clio!!!

after looking on autotrader i have noticed many imports, can anyone tell me if they are all imports or is there uk versions as im a bit nervous about buying an import!!!
thanks

damn i wanted to go to that but i couldnt!!

very nice choice matey thats what i wish my next car to be!

they fly saw loads at trax at silverstone hmmmmm! hehe

think they have uk versions as far as i am aware but dont quote me on that just saw the title lol!

nice choice let me know if you get it i wanna see it!!

vix :)

You will be looking for a while to get a good condition, standard one! Most have been used and abused, but a goodun goes for around 5-7k.

big thing is to look for holes in the dash if it is an import

the japs like bolting on huge rev counters, almost a sure sign the car has been thrashed

right yes there are uk ones that are sunny gti-rs only 70 of them tho so they fetch top $ if in good nick. the sr20det is a very nice engine the na version produces 150 the turbo is 220 ish (cant remember lol) the gear box is made from coat hangers and the brakes are far too small so need replacing also the jap version has an umbrella in the drivers door

lovely cars

  S4 (320bhp) + Clio 16v

My mates day had got a pulsar with 100 NOS in it. Drives like he is on the track. He goes to santa pod a bit. The thing is rapid. Dont think they look all that but for performance i would have it.

umbrella in the drivers door? i didnt know they did an na version? all the cars i have seen have also done extremely low miles for their age!

Cant stand the look of them

Are very fast tho.

My mate has one, think he is elling it soon, spent ages looking for one now he has one he has realised he cant afford it.

u can get a 1.4 and 2L pulsar. pulsar is just a jap sunny so same engines. thats y the beasts are called gti-R no matter wat, sunny or pulsar

  Fiat Coupe 20v turbo

I think that standard they are pretty ugly , but dropped on 17s with cut out for intercooler they look well nice, thought about getting one but I heard about big bills for clutch/ gearbox and running costs are high. Could have probably got one the amount Ive spent on the Willy though.

  Clio 172 cup

I think all sunnys are white,

Ben R , they are not w**k but the running costs for these cars does take the piss

nope

only available in red, white and black

correct, the gearboxes are made of old coat hangers & paper mashay & the rods & pistons are really ice lolly sticks & empty yourgt pots painted silver !!

DONT.....ill say again......DONT buy a standard one buy one thats had wads of cash spent in the engine bay then it will only cost you a couple of grand per year to run !!!

great in a straight line tho.......yer just bolloxed if you encounter a corner !

after other info ive been given about them from various scorces of expertise...(1 of them being BenR) id rather have a scooby !

i deliver to norris tunning about once a week, theres a black one up there with the engine in the boot !! & what do the experts think of them ?? "never ending money pits" was the reply i got !!

saw one on the rollers after direct port N20 was slapped on.......about 2 secs later rods were banana shaped.

They only impress on the 1/4 mile, not that 1.4 miling is anything to get worked up about unless you have over a thou brake.

wouldnt feel comfortable driving a nissan sunny though, just cos its a sunny. pulsar sounds much meatier!!! i understand that the running costs are gonna be high, but to be fair any turbo car pushing out 220 bhp as standard is gonna be expensive to run. It was either this, an impreza turbo or a gt4! all of which will be expensive. I was just well impressed with the pulsar at santa pod, they are much cheaper to buy and the ones i have seen seem to be in good nick with very low miles!

Definitely straight-line weapons. They wop-ass on standard wheels and a new turbo/chip. Stone-age 4wd technology and shimano V-brakes make it very interesting to drive (good if you like making your passengers sh*t themselves or if you like racing up and down a runway with spectators).

  Clio RS 200

I still have mine, its got about 270bhp. As mentioned the brakes are crap you realy need some big disc with 4 pots to do any justice. The gearboxes are prone to blowing third if i remember when putting around 300bhp through it. You can get gear kits to sort this out if willing to pay for them. The handling is quite good if once again you put modded stuff on and bin the std wheels for something a bit bigger. Overall a rapid car that sounds great and revs to about 8000 no probs putting flames out the back and banging away on full boost. Second hand parts are quite pricy.

I cant believe some of the things i just read - blatently from people who have never driven one!

0-60 is 5.4 standard, 220bhp, 4wd.

De-limited it will do 150 mph all day long

As for the comment about - throw it into a corner and youre in trouble, have you ever driven one? I dont think theres a Clio out there that would out handle a 2.0 Turbo charged 4wd Rally Car, remember that is what the car is, as is an Impreza, Evo, Intergrale - theyre all very good handling cars even in standard form.

Lower it and put a rear strut brace in, and youll beat imprezas all day long through the twisties, after all this is a 4wd Hatch back remember!

Just my 2pence worth.

By the way colours are, Black, Grey, White, Ivory, Red and This odd Green Colour.

Not entirely true, a 172 wouldnt have trouble keeping up with an Escort Cosworth round the bends, and a new Subaru would make it look stupid, i know the Sunny probably isnt as old hat as the revamped Sierra but i doubt its as clear cut as you say Nick, but considering you own one im not suprised by what you said! ;)

Are you serious? You think a Fwd car could keep up with a Cossie???

Theres no way - any 4wd rally car is going to be quicker round a track/twisty section surely!

Shame the boxes are made of play dough.

(ps std cossie and a 172/cup are not that far from equal 4wd isnt the be all and end all you know.)

LOL its all crazy talk!

First things first Im sure there are plenty of Clios that could out handle a 2.0 turbo charged rally car. By which I assume you mean not the actual rally stage car, but the roadgoing version. The size of the engine and the induction method have little to do with the handling beyond the location and weight distribution of the engine itself. And if you do mean a real rally car, then the old Clios were also run as rally cars and circuit racers, as are various incarnations of the modern Clios.

Next item: I used to think GTi-Rs were hideously ugly, fast in a straight line but not setup to handle well - Sunnys never having been renowned for being great drivers cars nor having won or even competed in any motorsport I could remember. Well 2 out of 3 aint bad, cos then I saw a lightly modified GTi-R destroy all comers at a track day!

It was basically on bigger brakes, and slightly bigger rims, a little bit of engine work, running something like 270-280bhp I think. I am serious when I say that lap after lap this thing was reeling in everything in sight, the usual track day motors, Scoobies, Evos, Cossies, Elises, all easy pickings. The geezer had only just bought it and was giving it a shakedown and AFAIK he was no mega driver, it was just a fast car that handled well. Ive never driven a GTi-R myself but never again will I repeat the mantra that such and such a car is all straight line and no handling until Ive driven it.

Unfortunately GTi-Rs are ugly IMHO, only seem to come in 3 colours, and I have heard of very expensive repair bills for what seems to be a weak engine design. Maybe you should find a GTi-R club and see what they have to say about it? Usually you can get all the ins and outs of ownership from actual owners rather than people passing on what theyve heard down the pub lol!:D

We will see matey. we will see :D

top comments from nick, maybe you 4wd lovers should get down from the ivory tower so you can hear us.

As for repairs - its not a lot different then taking a Clio to a Renault garage, you want to use a specialist, which tends to cost money - luckily my Dad was happy to work on mine so it actually cost less to run in terms of maintenace then my Clio...... shudder at Cambelts, and Steering racks..........

Worst part on the GTI-R is the Clutch, but theres two people in the owners club that will do these for £150 - i couldnt even get my Clio Clutch changed for that!!!

The Elise is an awesome car - just a shame they didnt make it more powerful!

Exige kicks ass

most cars will handle better after youve thrown £25-30k on em !! (presuming some of it has been spent on steering & suspension )

Nick 2 broken cars ???? WTF ? whats gone pete tong eh ??

Oh, and rallying.....yea......ever wonder why it was pulled after one of the most unsucessful careers ever......i dont see any privateers running them.
Evo, Scoob & Intergrale to a lesser degree, are completely different animals. Its like comparing a metro turbo with a 6R4.

Lower it and put a rear strut brace in, and youll beat imprezas all day long through the twisties, after all this is a 4wd Hatch back remember!

Thats all it takes, quick......ill get on the blower to Adrian Newey!

Just my 2pence worth.

Sorry, its jsut such a boring car and i wouldnt touch one. Trackdays are awful places to judge cars since the drivers are of such differing levels that crap cars beat exotica. 2 trackdays ago i pulled over half a lap on a M12 in one session.....does that say mroe about me, my clio, his car or him?..........youll never know.
