Quaife vs gripper diff/ m factory

I havent had a chance to try my quaife and guys at the track are saying I will swap it out for an m factory due to the quaife spinning up on corners on the inside wheel that may cause an overall spin.

Would love your opinions on this as the guys making the comments were "honda" guys...

I've known 4 gripper diffs shear on the drivers side. Am sure mark has said they've changed whatever they make them from but we got told by gripper that they were doing this when we sent one back that had sheared and the replacement was fractured and twisting after one tarmac event.

That was my understanding that on clios their very fragile.

Yes yes they all do BUT the two guys doing the talking came first and second in the U2L races on the weekend so must be doing something right.

It's fairly well accepted that an ATB diff is not the best application for racing.

The quaiffe will spin a wheel if there is ZERO contact between wheel and ground (Lifting a wheel, over a kerb for example).

Will also happen on ice or anywhere else you have low enough traction that there isn't enough resistance to send torque to the other side .

Pretty sure if there is Ice on the track you wont be racing or doing a trackday, the number of times around a circuit where the quaiffe will spin the inside wheel is minimal. Although for purely racing a gripper is better but not without its issues

The Honda guys that are racing will be using the MFactory plated diffs, they're not comparable to Quaifes.

My Quaife has been perfectly fine on track, as said the only time it'll spin up is when the wheel is unloaded i.e. in the air.

Even in snow i've managed to leave 11's down the road.

...I agree, including ongoing maintenance, it's a balance on personal needs and application. I went quaiffe because I wanted a fit and forget solution for the track/occasion competition toy. If i was more focused and had the time, I'd consider a gripper in the future

I run a quaife. Works perfect. Ive read that the gripper it a better option for a dedicated track/race car but not driven one myself.

They are helical diffs just like the quaife.

The OP's Honda mates will be referring to the MFactory Plated diffs which are available for other makes. They don't make a plated one for the Clio.

The first MFactory ones for Clios were terrible if i remember rightly, way too much backlash.

I did look into wavrtrac diffs for Clio but only make it for Clio 197/200 . Regal motorsport did say if they get enough interest in them they can get it made but will need roughly 20 people which may be difficult to get now due to the age of 172/182 clips now.

I spoke to pms he said he sold about 20 of the m factory ones and had no returns or warrant issues, he says if I send him my box he would have it back to me fitted In a week,

Northloop needs 6 weeks turnaround on a quaife because quaife take there time sending the diff back, I'm pulling the engine out to boost it so a week better than six but not if the m factory diff is garbage

I wasn't having a dig your famous in the Clio world for being the diff man

It'll still go in a 182 just the speed sensor won't get connected.

Like asked above if your selling i would be interested, pms quoted me 1400 and that's collecting my gearbox fiting the diff then posting it back,

Which seems fair but it never hurts to save some cash

That seems fair to me will the box work in mine I have ph2 172 non cup with esp so id assume my car takes speedo from abs sensor would your box work ?

Yeah his box would work, but there'd be a speedo drive that you'd leave unconnected. The issue is putting a non 172 cup gearbox into a cup, not the other way round. You'd also have different ratios

Well I can answer this question very easily. The mfactory is essentially a copy of a Quaife diff, so they’re the same. One is cheaper than the other by around £30/£40 once you’ve added all the extras you need to make the mfactory as reliable as the Quaife.

So quality wise the quaife has the upper hand as the Origional, but the Mfactory does the same job for a marginal saving.

Gripper, in trackday spec will last 3 years you've just text me and uses Red line mt90 oil. I would assume then your more likely to have a gearbox out to repair synchros again before the gripper needs looking at? The service kits are pretty cheap aswell looking at them.

Out of interest how much lock does the quaife/Mfactory diff provide as a maximum and what range can you get from the adjustable gripper?
