*question* engine trouble

  As father and son....

was just out doing the interior in the car installing a few bits and so on. went to turn the car over to go out for the afternoon and it wont start. battery sounds fine, electrics work and so forth but it just sounds like theres no spark to fire the car into action. has anyone had this or has any idea why it might be happening?

have you tried locking the car then unlocking it? I think if you have the car unlocked, but dony start it in a certain time the immobiliser engages itself.

Is the car turning over but not firing up?

HAve a look at the TDC sensor, its situated at the top of the gearbox rite up against the engine block.

Remove and clean it up, also make sure connections are ok.

disconnected and reconnected every bit of wiring i could find, working fine now thanks guys

  As father and son....

the problem has reared up again. car doesnt start first time, and occasionally the rev counter wont work. this is starting to do my head in, renault want £68 / hour to diagnose the engine trouble and frankly its starting to become a pain, everytime im out in the car i worry about getting back in and starting the bloody thing back up again

sounds like tdc sensor with-out a doubt - does it do it more so from hot after you have left the car 4 a bit??

  As father and son....

i cant say ive noticed it being a particular problem from hot or cold, blinded by rage if you will :p whats the easiest way to get to the TDC sensor?

its at the end of the head (gearbox end) bolted to top of gearbox by 2 10mm bolts has a black connector with two wires connected to it _ possibly sat under the thermostat housing

holy crap i have absolutely no idea how to get anywhere near that :) im somewhat......lacking in expertise heh

  As father and son....

im up in birmingham sadly :( provisionally booked into renault for thursday AM at 8:30. is it worth me having a bash or just leaving it to the professionals?

  BMW M135i

Lookng at the old haynes manual it doesnt look too complicated so id personally have a bash at it. Can photograph the page if you want so you can see what to do. Just let me know. Im in nuneaton just north of coventry if its any help.

I had a similar problem last week. My 172 started sometimes, other times it didnt. Cleaned the TDC sensor (cheers loopielou / Mike172, for tip) and connectors and so far I have had a week of trouble free starts:D

Dude, its not hard to do. I managed it and for a man who can burn soup, thats saying something.

All you need to do is.

1. Take off your air filter housing.

2. Under the housing - side of your engine you will see (Bmh pic 13.53).

3. Undo to two bolts (10mm IIRC).

4. Clean sensor and connectors.

5. Re fit and connect.

6. Filter back on.

And...........................Job done. It took me 1/2 hour to do, and cost nothing.

  As father and son....

now im with you, back to the great outdoors armed with.......false hope. thanks mate brb :)

easiest way to remove the housing? tried those two nuts and they refuse to budge. in a rather awkward position for getting a wrench in there with the plastic grooving each side

patty showing his support on msn even if he doesnt on the cs forums ;)

two bolts are out and its swung open, but doenst completely remove, correct?

  As father and son....

yeah trying bud trying :) id rather learn a bit about my car than have to take it to renault at 68 quid / hour if its really this sensor doohicky

  BMW M135i

No, it only swings open, you should be able to get to the bolts holding it to the block now so you can remove them.

  BMW M135i

OK, you should be able to unhook the hose that feeds air into the airbox so you can get that out of the way. Then you should be able to get at the sensor now, if not then the bit of airbox still attached to the engine needs to be removed. The haynes isnt overly clear and I cant really see from that picture.
