Question on mp3 quality and burning CDs!

This may be a really stupid question.....

but...

does the quality of the mp3 you've ripped matter when you burn a copy CD for the car?

i.e. if I rip at 128k, will it take up the same amount of space when burnt onto an Audio CD as if I'd ripped at that 'mathematically flawless' level?

I'd just prefer to rip at a better level so my car-copies were better, but if I can't fit a top-quality version on when burning an Audio CD then I won't bother...

Fanks! :)

right you rip a track at 128k the resulting file size is smaller than the same track ripped at 192k

so if you then made a cd of mp3's ripped at 128k it would be smaller than a cdfull of tracks ripped at 192k

but if you change them back to cd audio they will take the same space as its done on track length not anything else

Proper CD quality is 320Kbs
any less and you lose quality, although your ears don't really hear it. I won't encode anything under 192Kbs as you get a slight digital sound to the encoding. The lower the Kbs, the grainier and loss of quality occurs.

These are the compression recommendations

Cd quality = 320Kbs
Near cd quality = 192Kbs
Low cd quality = 128Kbs
Tape quality = 64kbs
Radio = 56Kbs

All mp3 coding does is when it's compressing the file, it removes all the frequencies and empty space that wouldn't normally be heard to the human ear.

320kbps is a bit overkill it is actually higher than CD quality as well. 256kbps is actually cd quality. Anymore is just making filesizes bigger for no gain in quality typically. But a lot of it depends on the CD as well some cd's use crap compression techniques.

But in all honesty ripping from a cd to mp3 then back to cd again its not so much the bit rate that makes the track its the encoder you used some encoders you can tell a difference between the cd at 320kbps and you cant tell between 192kbps. Its all dependent on the software used as that chooses which bits of the file to leave out during the compression.

^^ How can it be "higher" or "better" than the original recording?
It's either an exact duplicate copy or a lower grade copy, but it can't be higher or better.
Recording tape and vinyl is exactly the same, you can't make it any better than the source your taking it from. You can tweak and play with the sound and frequency, but it still won't be any better.

What i mean by better is that the 320kbps has the ability to be better than cd quality. just creates a larger file size without actually adding anything to it. You wont hear a quality difference over 256kbps. The original source and the encoder makes more impact on the sound compared to bit rates though. Hence why you can get a 160kbps track that sounds as good as 320kbps tracks. Theres more to it than just how big the file is.

I wish I hadn't asked now... LOL :clown:

Lol. Mate there are entire forums dedicated to this. Telling you everything from software to use and what bit rates etc are best for the type of music. As types of music can make a difference to what you should encode at as well if you want the MP3 to sound as good as the original.

however if your ripping them use VBR at 256kbps+ it usually gives a nicer sound compared to a fix bit rate.

Not disputing that, just can't be possible to be "better" than the original.

So size doesn't matter? ;) LoL
Is that a confession? :S ;)

^^ nothing wrong with vinyl matey, I prefer it to CD too tbh, just not as much of it about nowadays
