Quick/easy tyre question

What does the "87" bit of a tyre specification refer to in the example below?

215 / 40 R17 87W

Is it something to do with sidewall stiffness?

Cheers

Cheers folks.

TomTom: I was almost right! Cheers.

I'm looking at tyres 215/40/17 87W for my Ibiza Cupra TDI (the standard tyres are 205/40/17 84W), so I'm guessing tyres with an 87 load rating will have thicker (and consequently) stiffer sidewalls than an 84 load rating tyre?

sash_girl_clio: nah, that's the "W" bit (W in this case is up to 168mph IIRC but it's the only rating available in the tyre in this size I'm looking at).

If you're going from an 84w to an 87W it's more than likely the new tyre is an extra load. Basically can hold more weight on each four corners. Sidewalls are stiffer. Not much difference really, wear is still generally the same.

Cheers.

It's the Toyo Proxes 4's I'm looking at, new tyre just out apparently but a development on the T1-R...

I get W's just to be on the safe side, I know those speeds wont ever be reached, but as the 182 has no spare, every little bit of tyre strength helps! lol
