Quicky! Renault Service...

reno just rang me saying my front pads only have 20% left, they want 77+VAT for it... is that expensive? Can i get it cheaper and take it to someone to fit...?

Cheers.

right il phone them back and tell them to forget it! how many miles you lot recon i got left in them...?

what am a looking to pay if i get same sort of pads that are on as standard? and whats involved after a pad change.... do the brakes need bleeding?

  BMW M3
The link above are pretty standard brakes... nothing really involved afterwards... just bed them in correctly. Can bleed then but not nessessary unless your brakes arent working too well or you track alot etc..

£20 for some standard Ferodo pads

£17 for FDB845 from Halfords. 40 minutes to fit. No need in DS2500's I chnaged to them only becaise I managed once on one track day to fade them but that was at Bedford which kills brakes no other track day did it.

Your pads arn't worn though.

The thing is Renault say any less than half of the material worn and ther worn as they have a minimum thickness which is quite a lot. You can use them right down.

£77+vat ins't bad for Renault prices.

just been to pick it up and they said theyre 80% worn yada yada... driving it home and upon braking they start squeeling/screeching... never did this before i dropped it off....

so edde, not worth changing yet?

Nope not worth chnaging unless your unhappy or think there damaged.

If Renault techies have been fiddling they might have knocked dirty round I woulnd't pwrry about a little squeking they might have removed the calieprs and the pads arn't sitting in exactly the same place.

Strangely enough, took mine in the other week to Renault and they said my rear pads were 70% worn.

£ 89 inc VAT to replace, while they've got the wheels off.

No thanks I said, my mate is a racing engineer [and a fully skilled mechanic], he'll do them for nowt if i get the pads.

PS, 1500 miles later, still not had them changed......stilll no problems either.

are the standard discs and pads good enough mate
More than adequate I did loads of track days on them driving as hard as i could without issue the 150hp homogolised Williams used the same brakes so thats an idea how good they are. the cars overbrakes realy compare the brakes to other sporty cars ie SXI corsa and you'll see how oversized the brakes are.

Its diffiuclt to give an exact figure for wear so they just almost make up what they want mine have been officialy 10% worn they had only been on for about 4 miles.

ok then should be ok.

also edde, they where saying my passenger side front tyre is at 3mm, and rear at 2mm, although the two front tyres where new not even a month back? any ideas what might be (pressures maybe?)

err its more usalt for the wear to be

Most wear

Front passenger
Front driver
Rear passenger
Rear driver

Least wear

Just have a look at the tyres yoursefl see if the wear is nice and even at the front thats all you can worry about as well as the pressure being right.

They are unlikly to have got the measuring stuff out and measure accorsa a few points they'll have done it by eye which ins't that accurate)

If you have differetn compunds though front and rear they wear at different rates.

  172 cup
when renault looked at mine and said what percentage wear they are, they were very inaccurate, i have since checked them by measuring them

Talking of percentages...

When I took my car in to Renault I think they were 0% booked up that day and 100% desparate for some work!

That said, AC Williams at Grantham are pretty good.
