R888 or A048 on daily driver

Anyone on here do this? If so what are your impressions in terms of wet or poor weather grip levels, lifespan etc. I'm considering throwing a set on when my tyres next need replacing.

IIRC DanR runs 888's daily. I've got a set in the garage, selling them soon (but 15's so probably not of interest). There's a noticeable difference in grip when cold, and they do not cope with standing water, they aquaplane on the shallowest puddles. Ok when dry or even damp, pretty much anything but standing water. Wouldn't expect them to last long, you can tell how much softer they are just by touching the surface. Personally, I wouldn't. Especially given the cost.

I think Dan is on pe2's again now as his front were low. Adeyspec runs them all weathers, I had a little go in his car the other night (213bhp cammed and itb'd) it was wet and it was fine. Puddles would prob be a different story.

Tbh id feel safer on them than some cheap chinese budgets that some people buy.

Oh and Warren, id be interested in them in 15'' if your getting rid

Selling them soon as. Only done one (wet) day at Bedford on them. Currently on 15' Magnesium OZ F1's (selling as well), soon as they are seperated I'll pop a thread up.

I changed back to toyo T1-Rs a week ago after the last 5 months on A048s.

It's softened it slightly and that's a relief tbh. In this recent cold weather, for the first 10-15 minutes the A048s were really harsh until you got some heat into the sidewalls. Well, that's what it felt like, and the grip overall was terrible most of the time.

Even if it gets clear and sunny now, you rarely get the chance to use them on roads you know will be dry :(

I had the A048 on my exige, in the dry they were awesome! Really were unstickabke. Possibly partly to do with the car, I dont know. But in the wet they were scary!

Going over standing water was terrible and even crossing over White lines unsteadied the car..

Not for me thanks

Warren if Whitely doesn't have them i will asap. was after a set within the next 2 weeks really. if you can seperate them i'll take them off your hands as soon as.

195/50/15?

sorry to go off topic :p

back on topic actually...

Si - can you get 888s for 16s with the correct profile? i'd have a look at the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tyre too??

Loony live up to your name and get them on ! ;) Mate was running them daily on his GTi 6 did not do it for to long lol

Only thing putting me off is how abysmal they are in the wet. If last year was anything to go by there will be two days when I'll see any benefit and the rest of the year they'll be ditchfinders.

They're actually ok in the wet, as long as you don't come across standing water. I used them on the way to Bedford, was pouring with rain. Was aquaplaning at 40mph, shallow puddles. For road use, on a daily driver, I can't see the benefit in using them.

my god you're mad. at least 3 months of crap weather ahead of us. is it worth wearing out bloody good tyres in s**t weather when you can't even drive that quick?

what car are you in now loony? why not try what jon r was running? those hankook things, he loved them.

Still in the 182, buying an apartment has scuppered any plans for a new car for the forseeable future. I'll just keep it and as things break and wear out start modding/upgrading as I go. I expect I'll keep it for good and eventually it will become a track day toy when its too old to use as a daily driver.

I wasn't intending on going the route of the R888 or A048's until the PE2's wear out so a few months off yet.

I have 888's still on the bmw, buts its been sat battery less for a month and doesn't go anywhere. on a daily driver complete waste of time imo, unless you commute from nurburg to Adenau everyday. It takes the best part of a lap of the ring to get my 888's to temp, I doubt you'd get em anywhere near best temperature on any commute, waste of time.

Oh and I had a lift with benton in the shed at xmas and his had track tyres on, two words " OHHHHHH NOOOOOO"

I think you'd have to be an complete retarded idiot to drive round on 888's in the winter. If anyone who does run them crashes on the ice i'm going to stop, point and laugh.

I'm sure the recovery guy thinks you are all complete heros for running those over the winter. Not.

Last winter the Primera moved a grand total of 0 miles when it was icy. Not worth the risk.

I was out on track with a guy at donnington and the track was totally wet with no standing water, once he had heat in them they were brilliant. I wouldn't like to try them on the road in the wet though.

I'm guessing from the comments RE getting temp into them they don't have a higher silica content akin to winter tyres making them softer and more grippy in sub 5 degree temps then.

I am sure there was some info saying the should not be allowed to go below a certain temp.

You wont get em warm enough to work properly, 888's work great in the wet when they are warm and there is no standing water, Hit that like you would on the road and you'll be knocking sparrows nests out of the hedgeback, if you havn't already climbed a lampost backwards trying to get heat into them. Winter tyres like these on my golf, are designed to work better in below 7 degree temps, and offer better, grip, water dispersion and improve braking etc. Any other soft summer tyre has the opposite effect in cold weather.

Its now illegal to drive in germany between december and march unless you have winter tyres, they do that for a reason LOL

Winters are never gonna be like summers, You just have to change the driving style to adapt, this vid sum's it up, TBH dont know why the Uk dont adapt a winter tyre policy like the germans, would save a shed load of lives and accidents

This vid shows the differances.

LOL only a dumbo would run 888S in winter

Come on Si, sort it out

I wasn't asking in relation to winter just for general use on the road. Sounds like they're only really any use for a couple of weeks in the summer and even then only if you intend to get some temp into them.

I scared myself a few times on the old Belgium motorways in the wet. Coming out of Liege once I thought we were gonna's and we were only doing 60 odd. Personally i'd keep a set on a spare set of rims and run them when you get to where you are going. However when it was 35 degrees in Corsica last summer they were epic!

They are Track tyres, your never going to be able to use them on the road as intended, if you do a shed load of track days inbetween daily driving then fine. They only work properly at temp, If you want em on just to look cool, then its pointless, You either warm em up and get cracking or dont bother. Mine is fine on the road on 888's, but downright scary when its wet and theres standing water, and how many dry and sunny days you gonna get in the uk. You end up driving at 30 mph everywhere incase theres a puddle round the corner. I had to park mine on the side of the autobahn in a downpour after it aquaplaned across two lanes

Didn't think the difference would be that great. Do we get enough cold weather to justify the winter tyres? If I'll see the benefit I'd buy a set, but I don't want to be changing wheels twice a week!

As Weeman mentioned it's Below 7 degree's (I wrongly thought 5) but IIRC it's something silly like summer/all year tyres only produce about 20% of their maximum grip in those temps due to the composition of the rubber used.

That last statement was damming enough to put me off running them cloggy ;)

having said that, it does work in reverse, If it warms up as it often does, the winters will work the other way if it goes above 7 degrees, and you'll lose braking distance etc, But not as much of a worry when its nice and dry.

If I had a baby to transport etc, I'd seriously consider investing in a set for winter in the uk, plus you get tio run black steelies and look uber hardcore, and it saves your wheels getting fecked up in the salt and shizzle, although mine go onto the std golf wheels.

weak double standards dave. i thought didn't worry about your wheels getting dirty?

I didn't realise getting temp into them was such an issue.

I've only ever been recommended them by friends who compete or run regular track days with list 1bs. All of which said they're fine in the wet. spose i was wrong to not consider the temp thing.

spanner in the works for my tyre choice. lol.

I wouldn't use the R888 on a daily driver just because of the wear issue, your going to be going through set upon sets of tyres every year

If you live or drive anywere there's likely to be mud on the road then the R888 are dangerous and they are very bad for standing water.

Did you miss the part where I said they go on the std golf wheels u tit. Looking after wheels, I havn't had a complete set of centre caps on any set of wheels in the last 5 years LOL

-15 yesterday, I'd of roffled if I had 888's on, and then gone back to bed and called in sick
