I had this problem on my car a while back...when it happened to me first was on the motorway the only way the noise went away was if I put my foot on the clutch!?! When I got home I looked over the car... and with some help from ppl on here, it was the clutch release bearing that had gone!!!

Hope this helps!

If you use the search forum on here there a few posts that have the same problem either Clutch Release Bearing or Thrust Bearing (same thing). When mine went I took it to the garage and as it turned out the clutch was also beginning to slip cause the clutch plates were knackered!!!so on went a new clutch, cable, bearings, mounts. Cost a few quid doing that!!!

Assuming your clutch is ok,you can check yourself by looking under the car around the gearbox for leaking gearbox oil?the other thing to do is check gearbox fluid level and top up as this can cause the bearings to dry up and make that noise?!!

Hey, I've had a similar problem the past few days, today especially.
I find that when I ease off the accelerator that there is a strange tapping noise of some sort, it starts immediately when you ease off, clutch, or free wheel, and stops again as soon as you accelerate again or maintain a constant speed.

I only really notice it while on main roads/motorway, ie. 50+mph.

Car only went through the MOT last week and there was quite a few parts got and installed by a Renault garage about a month ago.

Any ideas?!
